Lenore hummed a soft tune to herself as she flew over the Galar fields, her sharp eyes scanning the ground below. Her trainer… well, wasn’t much of a trainer these days, and allowed her to come and go as she pleased. In exchange for curry, she would work as a taxi, flying trainers through Galar. She sometimes got extra treats from the trainers she carried, but today, she was just feeling the wind in her feathers. It was a lucky day, no clouds in the sky, no fog to stick to her wings. Just the warm summer air and the sun on her back.
She could see a few wild Pokemon peeking out of the grass at hopeful trainers, and she knew many of them would be caught before sundown. It was nice to have a trainer, sure. She’d spent her youth fighting as a Rookidee and Corvisquire, and she and her trainer had even made it quite far in the league. Though a few years after evolving for the last time, they’d decided to retire, and her trainer ran a curry stand and taxi service with her and her brother, Nevermore.
She swooped down to land by a tree to rest in the shade awhile, watching as young trainers fought against low level pokemon, smiling to herself. Oh, to be young…
A flash of pink caught her eye, another Pokemon skittering up to her, eyeing her through the weeds. “Obsidian? What are you doing here?” She couldn’t keep the joy out of her crow, leaning down to allow the Salazzle to nuzzle against her beak.
“I slipped away from my trainer.” She darted under Lenore, letting out a cute content sound as she nuzzled her cheek against the soft underbelly feathers.
“Now, won’t she worry about you?” Lenore gave a happy click of her beak, always happy to see Obsidian. “What if she thinks you ran away?”
“Well, I kind of did, didn’t I?” Obsidian giggled, stretching out in the sun and looking up at Lenore with an adoring expression.
“You shouldn’t sneak away.” Regardless, she settled down under the tree, looking down her beak. “Though I’m happy you’re here.”
“I am too. No one like you in Alola. Besides, there aren’t little Salandits following me around anytime I try to battle here. Just a big bird who loves me.”
“You’re obnoxious.” Lenore stretched out a leg to playfully nudge Obsidian with a talon as big as her torso. “Though I do enjoy your company, especially on sunny days like today.”
“I think you’d like Alola.” Obsidian sat back to look up at the sky better, the pink scales on her chest reflecting the light nicely. “It’s always so sunny and warm. Even when it’s all stormy it’s still warm. Here, it’s cold so much!”
“You just don’t like to be cold.”
“You’re the warm blooded one, not me. My trainer makes me wear a sweater! It clashes with my whole vibe!”
“Your… vibe?”
“My vibe! I work very hard to keep up my appearance.” She crossed her front legs, sticking out her tongue, displeased. “I don’t like wearing clothes. Bumble the Ribombee is the only one on my team who doesn’t mind. Snowy especially hates it. I think she just doesn’t like having to squeeze her tails through things.”
“...Isn’t Snowy an ice type? Why would she need to wear clothes in weather?” Lenore cocked her head, watching as Obsidian’s eyes followed a leaf that had been knocked from the tree by a passing Applin.
Obsidian nabbed the leaf, chewing on it. “Alolan cold isn’t the same as Galarian cold.” She gnawed on the leaf thoughtfully. “Alola is only cold really high up, so even a Ninetails gets cold. My trainer has an Absol, Eclipse, and she sometimes gets chilly here.”
“Must be an Alolan thing, then.” Lenore’s voice was lightly teasing as she gently knocked the leaf away with her wing.
“I was eating that!”
“Not anymore.” Lenore leaned down to bump her beak against Obsidian. “Why would you even want to eat that? I’m sure your trainer could make some curry that would taste way better.”
“It’s more fun to chase leaves. Soon they’ll be crunchy, which is even better!” Obsidian leaned on the tree trunk, watching a Zigzagoon pass, chasing after a Nickit. “But it’ll get colder and that’s worse.”
“You’re very dramatic, aren’t you?”
“Nope. I’ll stay with you in winter! I can just nap under your feathers and listen to your heartbeat.” Obsidian looked pleased with the idea, the tip of her tail wiggling slightly.
“As sweet as that is, you’ll have to figure out a way that won’t worry your trainer. You’re one of the strongest on your team, you know.”
“But Bubbly is even stronger than me, he could totally take over. Plus Snowy is super strong. I could sneak away to be with you.” She gave Lenore big eyes, the kind she knew usually got her way.
“No, don’t give me the pleading eyes!” Lenore held up a wing to block her vision. “Obsidian, you know I would love that just as much as you, but we have jobs. My trainer needs me, Nevermore can’t do all the work alone. And you know how much Snowy and Bumble look up to you.” She laid down awkwardly. She was a whole lot of bird.
“I know… I just wish I could spend all my time with you! Ever since we met, you’re the only Pokemon I can think about. I almost wish I was still wild and could run away with you.” She snuggled up to Lenore’s wing, making her giggle.
“You and I both know that if you were a wild Pokemon, you’d still be living it up in Alola with your harem of Salandits, just sunbathing the days away. You never would have made it here.”
Obsidian pouted. “Maybe I would have hitched a ride on a boat! I could hide in a trainer’s backpack if it meant getting to you.”
“If you didn’t have a trainer, you wouldn’t have a reason to travel. Your trainer seems to like it here, and she’s settling down. I think it means you’ll be here a long time, sweaters and all. Maybe if she beats the gym leaders, she’ll decide to settle down here just like my trainer did. And then you might not have to battle as often and we could meet up even more than we do now.” She nuzzled her beak against the top of Obsidian’s head to make her smile.
“Do you really think so? That would be nice. My trainer likes studying potions and berries, maybe she could make a shop next to the curry shop your trainer has! We could be neighbors.”
“Now that’s something I would enjoy.” Lenore hummed. “You really ought to be getting back to her, now shouldn’t you?”
“Maybe… She was trying to catch a black and white Zigzagoon… She probably noticed I’m gone.”
Lenore rested her head on the ground. “Get on. We’ll find her and I’ll drop you off. I may need to be getting home too.”
“She’s wearing a green sweatshirt around her waist and an orange headband.” Obsidian laid on top of Lenore’s head, gently gripping her feathers. “Though I’m still down with the idea of running away together.”
“I happen to like curry. Not gonna happen.” She began to flap her wings, feeling Obsidian’s nails dig into her skin slightly as she took off.
Obsidian was giggling slightly once they were in the air, feeling the breeze rush past her scales, faster than even her top speed running. Before long, Lenore caught sight of Obsidian’s trainer, carefully landing. “I’ll see you around, love.”
Obsidian nuzzled her face gently against Lenore’s. “Soon! I’ll… try not to run off next time, but no promises!” She giggled as she returned to her trainer, casting one last look at Lenore.
She waited a moment before taking flight again, but as she began to head home, her chest was warm, full of love for Obsidian.
