Another "adventure in tonalities" with ye olde pen and ink...which I'm truly smitten by and enthralled with. I'm greatly humbled and quite inspired by this fellow: Franklin Booth
http://www.bpib.com/booth.htm
This is my little homage' to him, though I could never come close to his vision, talent or scope. Still it's good to be inspired: it leadeth to other things, sometimes grand things. We shall see.
Submitted for your approval: a study in tones and perspective and probably the only architectural thing that I've done to date. I'm as pleased with my cloud as anything about this piece! Yay clouds! I'm so horrible at clouds Go ahead, you know you want to touch them. Touch the pretty, pretty ink... Ok that's enough! ;)
Rapidograph pens on bristol board. I don't even want to tell you the amount of time that I spent on this, but it was all shear pleasure and Zen-ink tone-ecstasy.
Submitted here to scraps because it just doesn't fit the main theme of FA...and we both know what 'that' is. X)

Thanks, gatorlicious. I was quite pleased with several aspects of this piece, yet there are some things I would do differently. __but that's always the case when I finish something, I see the flaws in it. But, since it's the first of its kind that I've done, I'm quite pleased with the results mostly. I just started with a light pencil sketch and then went from there. Sometimes ink is very intuitive and the pens guided my hand mostly.
I so pleased you like that tree! I'm horrible with things like that and it turned out ok too and my cloud as well! Weeee! Adventures in ink. I'm awaiting "your" next ink of delights. You really need to share some of your work here, let's have a look. I needs it! __and yes, my hand was aching for sure, but it was a work that I did slowly and over several days too, so not too bad all-in-all. Once I start with ink...I get lost in it. I'm learning quite a bit with these free-hand Koh-I-Noor pieces. I suggest that you try a few, they can be most rewarding.
One thing that I "don't" like about Rapidograph pens is filling them up, what a mess! I did some hand inking on Sedric's commission with my old crow quill pens and it was joy to get back to them. Each media has its own quirks and pluses/minuses.

It's been at least a few weeks since I got my pens out and practiced with them, kind of got involved with other stuff and forgot about my ink studies. I know bad, bad gator.
Though I really do need to get back into my ink studies, way too much stuff to do and not nearly enough time to do it all.
You did real good with the tree there, I really like the contrast from light to dark on it. That aspect makes it stand out, almost is if it's a center piece for the whole picture.
I hear you on the Rapidograph pens as far as refilling and clean up goes. That and when the nibs get clogged up and you have to unclog them, now that is a pain in the ass to deal with.

You know? I've gotten so many comments on that tree it's amazing to me. Though of course I did intend it to be a focus, little did I realize how much the contrast in its light and dark aspects would affect people.
Don't make me get my whips out. *CRACCKS* It's time to get working on that ink! I'll have to put you in place of the errant rooster next.

Hey studhorse! Thank you so much for saying that. I've been working on this piece for days, but had to put it off due to Seddy's elephant Daddy piece (which was fun too). See above in my response to Karerease for other details...if ya wanna. :)
I'm SO impressed with Franklin Booth's work, too. I could spend a thousand years just trying to get close to his genius.

My attempt was at drawing the eye deeper into the scene and presenting tones that represent light qualities. Also! Composition was a focus here too, with intent on drawing your eyes around the piece to study it.
Your input and comment is most valuable to me! My gratitude to you, dearest coon.

ah, I think this is splendid! The texture is sumptuous, and I do so love the dreamlike setting, especially the monumental feeling of the architecture
and yes, as you say elsewhere every medium has its unique qualities. I remember during my (very) brief stint attempting to be a visual artist I was a little unhealthily obsessed with the idea of exploring at some point every visual medium in every combination. I was entranced by the inclusion of these details under the illustrations in my growing collection of art books

Thankee, dearest dragon! Such a very wonderful comment indeed. I think you should continue on with your art. One can't do it all though, there's just too much; but it should not keep you from exploring some facets. Of course your "art" is literature and writing and that is indeed a most fantastic media to be sure. :)
