Ive been having to battle blackberries in my Hydrangea bush in the front yard for years, i keep em trimmed out to the ground but this year i think the roots of the blackberries are stunting it, its not starting to grow and bloom like it should be doing now. I cant dig out the blackberry root ball cause it will kill the Hydrangea as its tangled in its roots. I need to talk to a plant expert I think.
Only thing I can think of is cutting down the blackberry and then selectively putting herbicide on the cut ends so that its absorbed into the blackberry only. I've seen the parks department do that with invasive plants when they're tangled with native ones.
I've had issues with the hydrangea over my grandmas house not blooming recently too. Weird since I've read they like water and we've gotten a lot of rain the past few years. The one in my yard never blooms, but its also in a really bad spot for hydrangea. Too shady and tangled with roots of the Japanese maple
