Now all that's left is a couple general board game and hobby
shops, and the selection they got in those place is tiny.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. Last time i saw a shop stocking Tamiya models has to have been a decade ago, if not more.

Yep, feel like a diying breed of stores. To easy to get them
all ordered online.
But I don't find it the same. But that's the marching wheels of change.

Still, I try to enjoy what's left, always pop into a model shop when I come across the ones that are still standing.

The owner is something of a legend in Indonesian scale modelling circle, his shop is the oldest and longest running in the country

They also have an online shop, but nothing beats discussing model and history stuff with him and other patrons

There are some nice kits they got there!

This is just their rack of old stocks, not shown in picture are rows upon rows of plastic, resin, PE, metal kits and conversions, paint, glue, decals, and other modelling materials from any manufacturer imaginable.

Sadly the last true hobby shop closed 3 years ago here. I don't consider the model kit section at Hobby Lobby a viable. Reminds me of the kits available at the old Ben Franklins...practically few selections.

Plus with the horrific costs of Dragon, Tamiya , Heller and Hasagawa kits nowadays. Been decades since I assembled a kit. And I still have a good 100 plus stored away to be built.

Academy and Trumpyboss kits are pretty reasonable in price, the quality of their older kits is kinda hit and miss but the newer ones is pretty reasonable i think

Plus if you like weird cold war aircraft (like me), Trumpeter is the way to go

my personal heaven sure is full of models like these waiting for me XD

Indeed until kitty hawk released theirs in 2014, your only option in 1/48 plastic is Revell-Monogram, Hasegawa had one in 1/72 since way back in the 70s

Twice i've asked the owner about some rare kits (1/32 hunter and 1/48 sea vixen), both times he answered "yep, we have that", both time i closed the deal

I remember going to Leonardos in Akihabara in 2006. 3 floors stuffed with kits. It was absolutly orgasmic. I sent home 3 huge boxes of kits back then.

Sadly the owner died a few years later and that one does not exist anymore. It was the perfect shop while around.

Fast forward to 2021

I found out that the shop actually still exists, just a tiny bit away from the old place ( a block or two ) so I missed it in 2009 & 2016

Hopefully I can go again in 2022

There's a small unagi place in Shinjuku called 'kobayashi' if you're into it. I went there last time, their unagi bone soup is a killer!

I'm lucky to have quite a few decent model shops within my local area, and more a not-inconvenient distance away. But from seeing what you said in other comments, and from some of the things I've seen in YouTube and other places, none of the ones I know of in the UK ever have things like PE sets, resin accessories, etc in store, or if they do, certainly not large stocks of them with any kind of organisation to it. Plus in recent years they've started to scale back (pun not intended) their level of stocks, and you just don't see selections like this in most places.

I would build all these and use the rest of the parts for an MOC and do knot steel.
