There was silence.
It was a familiar companion to him now, the silence, along with the vast, horrible desolation that surrounded him as far as he could see. The world was dim and grey with night and through it, a lone figure, seeming small and frail against the severity of his backdrop, moved slowly but steadily along a broad, ancient road. Luke Damon trudged westward across the barren wastelands and numbly wondered to himself just how long he had been following the path to nowhere.
