Lol, oh I won't even pretend I don't watch it through rose tinted glasses, it's definitely rough around the edges at times. I think it was just so different from what I was exposed to at the time that it just has a high nostalgia factor for me.
Definitely try it, but if it doesn't really have you by episode two, probably safe to bail, it won't deviate much.
