So this is Roland, a man of both a deadly simplicity and a subtle depth. A Egyptian Mongoose, bred and born in South Africa. He led a rough enough life, on and off the radar for several years before he founded his own mercenary outfit and rose to regional fame in the upper half of the continent. Most would see him as a useful tool or a common thug, depending on their insulation from the realities of his world and their need for his services, and it's a characterization he's never seen fit to really oppose. As long as he and his men get food on the table, there's not much reason to worry about the opinions of those who need him to do their fighting for them. Anyone facing him will find a man full of cool confidence and ruthless skill, getting the job done any way it needs doing. Anyone except Tabari's father Amadi, that is. Roland and Amadi have had the most tumultuous of history between them, and their rivalry is as bitter as it is violent. (Nevermind that Amadi sees the mongoose as little more than a particularly stubborn annoyance.)

But there's a lot more to him than just a hired gun, even if it doesn't show so easily. Roland has a wild soul, always happiest when he's deep in the wilderness and as unrestrained as possible. He holds his freedom dear, in many ways indeed, but never breaks his word without an extreme cause. And every deep scar he bears is more than just a memento of a painful moment; They're all testaments to the dedication he has to his men, to ensuring that those under his command are well cared for and valued, and to accomplishing his goals with unwavering resolve. Perhaps his battered heart even still has some room left for love, deep down.

So while he's certainly rough around the edges, quick to the fight, and spectacularly strong-willed, Roland is also one of the most effective and dependable men you could come across. All the better for you if those traits work in your favor rather than against it.
