Dusk Departure

The sun began to set with the giggle of lion cubs echoing in the distance as the chirp of crickets began to sing their way up the blades of grass in the savanna. The two girls were playing in a small pond, splashing around, until Vitani heard her youngest brother calling for her.
"VITANI! MOM IS GOING TO SEND HER LIONESSES OUT LOOKING FOR US AGAIN! And you know what happened last time.... Come on, let's go!"
"Who's that?" Bahati said as their laughter died down.
"Oh, him? That's my brother... He's right, I have to go now."
"Go?! But we just started playing!" Bahati leaned slightly back whilst looking up at the Outlander girl. "Well, okay. But you'll come back tomorrow, right?"
"...I don't know, Bahati... If my mom lets me... but she doesn't let me go out often without my oldest brother watching us... today he was out on field hunt. It's kind of a rare thing for him to do." Vitani looked up and at Kovu in the distance, watching him pad off towards the border that divided the lush green land into the barren wasteland they called home.
"....Boys stink," Bahati smirked, trying to lighten the mood, since she could see something was bothering her new friend on the inside.
"Haha, yeah, that they do. But you, you're not a boy, so I like you," Vitani leaned forward and licked Bahati, running her tongue across her friend's soft cheek fur.
"Um.... hah..." Bahati felt her face turn bright red. Oh no! Did Vitani see her blush?! Why did she feel a flutter in her stomach when she did that, anyway?
"I.... Thanks Vitani. You're a good friend!" Bahati closed her eyes and smiled widely, pulling her ears back in contentment.
"You're not bad yourself! I'll do my best to come back tomorrow!"
"O-okay!"
And with that, the Outlander girl bounded off towards home where the sun was setting over the mountain tops, guiding her safely over the border.

This piece shows the very first time Bahati and Vitani met. As circumstance would have it, this is the first and only time they met as cubs! Something they’d recall later in life after they met again as adults~
