Cons and Costumes, Chapter 1
“Alright, is everything in order?” Violet asked, giving one last look over herself. “How does my hair look? Is the costume zipped all the way?” Lilly, her twin sister, rolled her eyes a little bit, shaking her head slightly in annoyance.
“You’ve checked everything like, five times now, Vi. I’m pretty sure we’re good.” Lilly grumbled, glancing at the mirror as well. “God, we look like such nerds in this.”
“Lilly. We ARE nerds.” Violet replied, purple eyes meeting her sister’s green, as she reached up and adjusted their costume once more, before taking another look over everything in the full length mirror of their hotel room. “And we’re heading into a con full of even more nerds.”
Regardless of what sort of costume they were wearing, the two would be sure to draw eyes no matter what. After all, a slender dragon girl with two heads wasn’t exactly the most common sight to begin with. Perhaps it was a stroke of random genetic luck, or perhaps there was enough hydra in their bloodline to make it happen, but regardless of how, the two girls had been quite the surprise to their family when they hatched.
“Yeah, we’re nerds but like… did you have to pick a costume THIS nerdy?” Lilly huffed, as she gestured with her arm over their body. The two were clad in a Star-Trek captain’s uniform, complete with the badge and rank pips. Custom tailored for their unusual anatomy, the tight red and black garment clung tightly to their slender form. At least it served to emphasize their curves reasonably well even if it was kind of itchy.
“Lilly come on.” Violet said with a light frown, looking to her sister again. “It was my turn to choose for the sci-fi con, and you promised you’d go along with it.” Her ears flicked back a little bit as she spoke, She could feel Lilly’s mild annoyance in the back of her mind, just as she was sure Lilly could feel her own slight disappointment. “Remember the deal we made?”
Lilly blushed a bit as she realized her behavior. “Y-yeah, you’re right. I’m sorry Vi.” She said, her tone softening from annoyance to apology. Gently she gave her sister a gentle nuzzle and a kiss on the cheek. “A deal is a deal and I promised. You get to choose the costume for Sci-Con, and I get to pick our costume for the Ren-Faire... You could have at least chosen the movie uniforms though, those were way cooler looking.” She said, blowing a raspberry playfully at Violet.
“Pfft. As if. The movies are TERRIBLE.” Violet retorted with a smirk, giggling a little bit. “Now c’mon, lets get a move on.” Reaching to the nightstand she grabbed their con-badge and bag, ready for another day of gathering souvenirs, autographs, and pictures. After taking one last glance in the mirror, they were on their way, exiting the hotel room and making their way down to the main con floor.
Along the way they caught many stares and looks from strangers and con-goers, some in costumes like their own, some just in casual clothes. But they simply smiled and waved, continuing on if nothing was amiss. After all they were used to the looks and attention by this point.
Despite the strangeness of their anatomy and their many small squabbles and arguments, the two had grown up healthy and happy, somehow managing to live a surprisingly normal life, and growing very used to explaining their situation to those who cared to ask. Now as adults they were as close as siblings could possibly be, and even though the medical technology existed that could make that it happen, the idea of being separated seemed practically unthinkable to both of them.
Soon enough the twins had made their way into the convention floor proper, wandering the many rows of booths and displays. Since this was Violet’s cosplay, she was essentially the one in the lead, controlling their body while Lilly was for the most part happy to let her wander about from booth to booth, and chatter away with the various menagerie of geeks and nerds.
All was not perfect however, and over the course of the day Lilly found herself becoming less and less enthused about the whole ordeal. Sure their costume showed a fair amount of curve and it was kinda sexy, but it was also hot and itchy spandex that was managing to ride it’s way up the crack between her butt-cheek and their tail.
There were also the small swarm of basement-dwellers who had taken to sort of following them around all day. Most were nice and relatively agreeable sure, but some of the others… not so much.
For example, there was the overweight, greasy smelling groundhog guy who felt the need to follow the twins around, while discussing the finer details of warp-field projection and why the show got it totally wrong. This would have been annoying enough, except he insisted on doing so in the most condescending tone imaginable… and for some reason he seemed fixated on explaining it specifically to just Lilly.
Then there was the skinny mouse boy with the coke-bottle glasses who followed them around all day just… staring. Not talking, not approaching any closer, not really interested in anything else. He was just… S T A R I N G.
And of course the tall, beanpole thin cat with the ridiculously huge ears. He seemed to be nice enough, but insisted on asking Lilly every single question about their cosplay and character that he could come up with. leaving her struggling to provide answers about Star-Trek minutiae on the fly whenever Violet was talking to someone else.
Still, Lilly did her best to be a good sport and go along with it, after all Violet was genuinely having a great time, and she’d hate to disappoint her sister by asking to leave or call it early. Besides, it wouldn’t be too much further before they got to the Warhammer 40k stuff, and that was infinitely more interesting to her than the oh-so-dry and boring Star-Trek.
In the meantime she did her best to ignore the nerds around her, and began to ponder the details of what she wanted to do with their Ren-Faire costume. There were a few… ideas… tumbling around in her head, but she’d have to be sure to get everything she needed for them first…
