"The funayurei are said to be the restless souls of sailors who died at sea, transformed into vengeful spirits due to the lack of a solid resting place. They travel on shallow boats in groups of three or more, carrying with them ladles and buckets which they use to fill passing ships full of water and sink them. The triangle headband they wear, sometimes known as a 'hitaikakushi', 'tenkan', or 'zukin', was a common burial practice in Ancient Japan that is common amongst depictions of ghosts (despite the fact that their original purpose is debated amongst scholars)."
The funayurei...truly, the most terrifying of all sea-faring ghosts. At least, ones that don't have any relation to Davy Jones or Flying Dutchmen.
