When Chip was freed by Ratchet's father, he promptly returned to his birthplace, which is a small village... but it was all destroyed. The diabolical Demon Lord burned the entire village to the ground, and left devastation all around to prevent his parents and the dragonkind from saving Chip when he was being abducted as an hatchling. This spot was exactly where he hatched, so that spot was permanently embedded in his subconscious to return home when needed. After witnessing such a devastation, Chip realized that there's no point in coming back to this village, so he will return to the cave where he was held against his will. That is his new home, even though he does not like it.
