This one had taken a toll on her, more than the last. The Revenants were growing stronger. It was becoming harder to tame them, to free the souls trapped within the shadow.
Hawthorn winced as she tugged her bandage firmly around her lacerated arm, relying on her fangs to keep one side steady whilst she wrapped the other end.
Some Blood Moons were harder than others, others were easy and there were few Revenants to worry about. This cycle seemed to bring relentless, cunning creatures,
one of note had tried to eat Hawthorn in her entirety in its’ massive jaws.
Its fangs had pierced her sides and were it not for her alliance with nature, the wolf may have succeeded.
There was trouble in the air; she could smell it. She knew not what was coming, but she knew that she needed to be prepared for once it made landfall.
Pinprick tears gathered in the corners of her eyes and fell from them, her whole body shuddering as she tied the bandages tight around herself.
Finally done, she rose shakily, leaning on the tree behind her for support. Weak grunts of effort left her lips, her ears flicking as the tree groaned worriedly.
“I’ll be okay… have another few weeks before they return.” she assured it, forcing a pained smile to her lips as she turned to face the tree, resting a hand against its’ mossy bark.
“I won’t push myself too hard.” she promised quietly, her ears twitching as she heard a squeak at her hoof. She leaned down and smiled, accepting the roll of gauze from a helpful squirrel. “Thank you.” she murmured, wiggling her tail.
She wasn’t alone in this war. That knowledge was both a comfort and a heavy burden. Emotional attachments she had to watch out for… but she couldn’t help it. They worked in conjunction, the forest supporting The Wildflower and The Wildflower safekeeping the forest. They were part of one another, and would fight these spirits of hatred together, despite injury or folly.
