I always have a bit of a love-hate relationships with crows. On one hand they just look cool, but on the other they're just sooooo black... At least with clothing i was able to bring in something other than black everywhere :')

Been a little while since i finished that so i can't recall exactly, but i think clothes were mostly self painted, with i thiiiiink a photo being implemented somewhere in the shoulder area. But maybe i'm making this up, it's hard to remember some specifics off the top of my head when every day is filled with drawing and it all kind of blends together. :')
Yeah, that is very helpful to bring some definition. Though honestly i feel i generally prefer the flat and non-distinct approach to black. (not JUST because i'm lazy), but of course that always needs a painting that allows for it to work, which isn't always the case and is rather tough to get right.
Weird, that's pretty standard in high end printing, and you'll see that in printing dialogue often. We'd run an Epson that had 8 cartridges: CMYK and 50% variants for the Giclees. I was the TA at my uni's art building's lab for a few years--by no means an expert, but I picked up some things.
Something related to what you mentioned: One could print 99% black on a 100% black field, which would generate that gloss/matte difference you're talking about, allowing a subtle but slick option for a dark theme.

This is gorgeous - I love the realism brought to the character's head. Excellent work with all the black going on here as well. The shadowing and highlights are so beautiful, wonderfully drawing the eye to the detail of their feathers. The character's outfit is very interesting, too. I'm liking the torn up knees for some reason.
