“VICTORY!” The game announcer declared as the freeze frame broke and The Gran character fell to the ground in defeat.
Kayla smiled as she racked in another victory with Ladiva. She pulled her hands off her new arcade stick and rested them behind her head as the victory animation played.
“Wow sis, that new arcade stick is impressive, I need to get me one of those now,” her friend’s voice spoke through her headset. “Anyway, that’s in for me; I need to sign off. Catch you around.”
“Later.” She disconnected from the discord voice chat and sighed. “Whew, his Gran game keeps improving. Even with this stick I need to up my game,” she chuckled and navigated back to the main menu. Her eyes quickly glanced to her phone. “I got some time, might as well do some practice matches.”
Kayla navigated her way back to the main menu. Right before she was about to hit practice mode, a “NEW” icon caught the corner of her eye. “What have we here?” she asked while her eyes moved over to see what it was. “Vyrn Mode? I can't remember that ever being announced. It must have installed itself when I was online. Might as well check it out.”
With a small shrug she went ahead and selected it. A small box popped up to explain what was going on. “Vyrn has found an orchard full of ripe apples. Unknown to Vyrn, the orchard lies just inside the empire’s domain. Take control of Vyrn and hold off against the enemy troops to protect your delicious bounty until Gran and company return to help out.” She read and pondered, “so, time attack beat 'em up segment?” She stroked her chin in though for a moment. “Sure, why now?” She hit accept and watched the screen load.
The black loading screen faded and the beginning movie started to play. It showed Vyrn sitting on a small pile of apples he had collected. He gave one a small hug before quickly devouring it and tossing away the core. A cartoonish burp escaped him and he smiled as he reached for another one.
Vyrn would stop as the clanking of armor filled his ears. He looked up and saw that there were soldiers near him. “DON’T MOVE THIEF!” one commanded and pointed a spear at him. Vyrn gasped and threw an apple at the guard. It bounced off the metal helmet with a clank and slightly stunned the guard. “HA!” he cried and hopped off the pile of apples.
Kayla chuckled quietly at the silliness as the screen faded to black once more. “Cute,” she commented as the screen returned to gameplay mode
The screen showed Vyrn before panning over to a few guards who ran in from the side of the screen. The camera quickly snapped back to Vyrn. “Okay, Just need to hold out until Gran and company get back. You can do this. You are a mighty and powerful dragon!” he exclaimed.
The word START flashed on the screen and a 10 minute timer appeared at the top. Slowly the guards started to move in on the little dragon.
“Okay so then...” Kayla pondered while she started to try out the controls for Vyrn. She saw she had a standard light claw attack, medium head butt attack, and strong tail slam attack. “Okay standard moves,” she noted and tried his unique move. Vyrn stood still and seemed to charge his claw up for a slash. “Similar to Gran. Makes a bit of sense.”
Kayla’s practicing was cut short as a few more enemies entered the screen. “Whoops,” she laughed and proceeded to take on the soldiers. The sight of the small dragon taking out the soldiers was quite comical. “Something tells me my friend will really like this mode too,” She smirked.
Having a bit of a breather she tried the special commands. She saw the standard was an apple toss which elicited another small laugh. She saw he also had Gran’s “boot” attack, an uppercut attack, and he could also eat an apple to regain some health. “That’s very useful for an endurance mode,” she nodded as more enemies were starting to come on screen. Slowly the small dragon was getting swarmed. “Oh boy!” she laughed as the danger was starting to amplify.
Time started to tick away as Kayla mashed away at the buttons. Her fight stick clicked and clacked in her flurry of motion. “Whew, this is a bit harder than I thought,” she mumbled as she drew closer to death. A small break in the action gave her a bit of relief as she healed. “Oh thank goodness for that skill,” she sighed, not daring to glance up at the clock for fear of being ambushed.
Kayla was starting to get a bit tense. More and more goons were swarming Vyrn and she was starting to feel exhausted. “Whew, hopefully this is done soon,” she groaned as a few enemies knocked Vyrn into a combo. “Dang it!” she hissed and tried to recover into a counter attack.
“Ten...nine...eight...” the announcer started to count down. Kayla’s eyes widened with the realization that victory was close at hand. She glanced up and saw her health was extremely low. “Crap, I don’t know how to activate the skybounds.” She was a bit too nervous to activate one as the motions would leave her open to attack. “Three...two...one!” Hope filled Kayla. It was almost over but she was down to the magic pixel. “Oh no!” She clenched her teeth slightly as she saw the milliseconds zoom by. She gasped as the timer hit zero. The game crashed.
“Wha…?” She stared at the desktop slack-jawed. “Oh come ON!” she groaned as her morale sank like a stone.. “Ugh, I might have to take that as a cue to stop playing,” she sighed and set her fightstick aside.
Her stomach rumbled loudly and she looked down at it in surprise. “And that is a cue to grab a snack,” she sighed and left her room and walked to the kitchen. “Now, what do I want?” she pondered and her gaze wandered to some apples resting in a bowl. She licked her lips as she started craving the juicy fruit.
“Well I guess that solves that problem.” She walked over and picked up one of the apples and bit in. The flavor was more intense than any other apple she’d had before. She swallowed and looked the apple over. “Wow these are really good. I have to ask mom what type she got, and hope she’ll get some more,” she thought out loud before quickly finishing off the fruit.
Kayla tossed the finished apple core in the garbage and sighed with relief. “Whew, that hit the spot.” She rubbed her belly and looked back over to the fruit. The apples almost seemed to be calling for her. “Well, maybe one more?” she smiled and walked over. A huge grin formed on her face as she picked up the second apple. “Yeah mom is definitely going to have to get more apples,” she chuckled and proceeded to eat the second apple faster than the first one.
Eventually, the bowl was empty and the garbage was filled with cores. Kayla looked over at the bowl and gasped. “Whoops,” she winced and walked to the bathroom to wash her hands clean of the juice. She looked in the mirror, then down at her hands, and then looked back at the mirror.
“What the heck?” she asked, perplexed, as she turned the water off. She dare not look away from the mirror. She leaned in closer and was a bit perplexed to see that her eyes were slowly turning golden. “Maybe it’s the light?” she suggested, her eyes getting a bit watery. She blinked a few times and rubbed them lightly to hopefully clear her vision. “What is going on? Was I playing that game too long?” She groaned and felt the tears finally leave. She blinked again and looked around. A small gasp escaped her and she realized that her vision seemed to have improved.
“That’s...what?” she asked, at a loss for words. She saw bright golden eyes staring back at her in the mirror. “That can’t just be the light.” As she was looking at her reflection, she felt her ears were starting to burn. “What, now?” she demanded, running a hand over the burning spots. As she stroked them, she felt something smooth and alien there.
Confused, she let go and tried to see what she was brushing against. Another gasp escaped her as she saw light red scales were growing on her ears, with purple on the tips. “What. The. HECK!?’ she cried. She could feel them slowly starting to grow bigger and longer.
“Ow, ow, ow,” Kayla winced as she felt like her ears were being tugged and pulled by invisible hands as they were growing out. “Oh this hurts,” she hissed through gritted teeth. She couldn’t help but glance in the mirror and saw how far her ears were sticking out. “Holy,” she breathed, giving them a small wiggle as they stopped growing. They weren’t finished changing though, and slowly she would start to watch them moving up the sides of her head and and on top.
“HOLY CRAP!” she exclaimed, but winced as her loud yell pained her more sensitive ears. She reached up to cover them, but the alien scales made her quickly pull her hands back. “Okay, no shouting,” she groaned.
Kayla’s hair started to tingle and her scalp felt strangely itchy. “Now what?” she groaned, reaching up to scratch at the discomfort. She was careful to avoid touching her ears again. As she tried to alleviate the itching, Kayla would see strands of her hair falling out. “Wha?” she whispered as she started to feel some bald spots on her head, as well as more hair falling on her shoulders and onto the ground at an alarming rate.
Kayla looked at the hair that littered the floor, and then looked back at the mirror. She reached up and felt her bald head. As her fingers ran across the smooth skin, the itching would strike again as the same light red scales were slowly starting to spread across her head. She was at a loss for words as she stared, mouth open at her reflection as it was becoming more bizarre by the moment.
Kayla just whimpered as she could not help but reach up and feel the smooth scales that were creeping across her head. “Whaat? Why am I becoming some sort of lizard freak!?” she demanded of her reflection. A dull pain struck Kayla right next to her new ears. “Oh man, now is NOT the time for a migraine,” she winced as the pain grew more intense. She could feel something pushing out of her skull. She shook her head a bit as a futile attempt to alleviate the pain. “Nope, didn’t work.” She groaned and looked back at the mirror.
Kayla could make out two lumps that were slowly growing out of her skull “More?” she asked as her ears could pick up a creaking sound. She could see what looked to be two flat triangular purple horns were growing out of her skull and slowly curving forward down her head.
“Horns!?” she winced at the sound of her loud voice. “Right,” she gulped and reached up to inspect the hard growths. Her finger shook a bit before making contact, but slowly she gave the horn a small rub and then pushed down on it. Another wince escaped her as she felt that they were firmly attached to her skull “Yep. Definitely horns.”
Kayla’s face was next to start aching as a few cracking noises struck her mouth. Kayla grit her teeth and a small hiss escaped from her. “Now whaaaaa…” she groaned as her words were lost. The cracking increased as she felt her mouth pushing slightly away out and away from her face. Breathing became troublesome for Kayla as her nose was slowly melting and moving away with her mouth. She could not help but gasp for air to fill her lungs for a brief moment.
“Gaaaa!” Kayla panted. She breathed through her mouth as her nose was fusing and shrinking into the end of her new muzzle. She tried to breath through her nose once it stopped, but it was a bit of a struggle as it felt congested at the moment.
A pinch struck Kayla’s teeth. Curiously she opened her new mouth wide and tried to angle it so she could look. “What is going...” she said before the question died off. She stopped speaking for two reasons: One, her voice was sounding a bit crackly and higher pitched. Two, she saw her teeth were shrinking and vanishing into her gums. Her canines, however, were starting to grow a bit longer and sharper, leaving her with those as the only teeth left in her mouth.
“What?” Kayla croaked before poking the small fangs. She closed her mouth and gasped “Wait I’m...” Before Kayla could finish, her world went blurry. “Damn it!” She cried and covered her eyes. Her eyes were getting watery and a few tears were dripping down the sides of her scaly face. “This is impossible! There is no way I am…” Kayla was hesitant and could not finish. Slowly she opened her eyes and looked back at the mirror. As her vision cleared, one more gasp escaped her as she stared at the brown eyed face before her. “VYRN!?” she cried in her higher pitched voice.
Kayla whimpered as she looked wide eyed at the alien head on her shoulders. She quickly reached up and felt if over again, unable to believe what she saw. Her fingers kept running across the smooth scales and her hands would occasionally brush and bump against her new horns. “Ow,” she winced. She gave her head a small rub. “How? How is this happening!?” She wracked her mind for an answer. “THE GAME!” she exclaimed, wincing from the sound before looking back to her room.
Kayla was about to turn and run back to her room, but a sudden wave of dizziness stopped her in her tracks. “Woah,” she groaned and grabbed the sink with both hands to keep herself from falling to the floor. “What was that about?” Kayla felt a wave pass through her entire body. The feeling made her shudder and she tried to look herself over and hold onto the sink. “What the heck was… why are my clothes baggy?” Kayla stopped as she noticed her garments were hanging loosely on her body. A quick look at the sink confirmed that it was closer than before. “I shrank!?” she gasped as she remembered how small the dragon was compared to the human companions. “There has to be a way to stop this..” She tried to run back to her room once more.
Kayla only got a few steps away from the sink before stopping in her tracks again. She yelped as she felt something stinging the area above her butt. “What? What now!?” she groaned as she rubbed the area to try and alleviate a bit of the pain. Her fingers brushed up against a small nub that was sticking out above her loosely held pants.
“Oh no.” She tried to look back and get a look at the nub. “No, no stop! I don’t want a tail!” she growled as her mind quickly linked what the bulge was becoming. Her complaint went unanswered as a bit more pain suddenly ran up and down her spine. Kayla grit her teeth as she felt a weight forming behind her. Her spine felt like it was getting longer and longer. Kayla gulped and nervously, and slowly turned her head back to look at the growing appendage. A slight gasp escaped her as she saw the thick draconic tail slowly growing out. The same red scales quickly covered the appendage as it grew out about half way down her legs. As white scales covered the tip of the newly grown tail, a small jolt struck the back of Kayla’s mind and she could suddenly feel control as the heavy tail swayed back and forth. A louder gasp escaped her as she felt the alien movement.
“Oh that… that’s...” She was at a loss for words as she looked back and controlled it instinctively.”That no… that’s n…” Kayla had a hard time concentrating on her sentence because her head started to feel fuzzy.
<Not right? Don’t be silly! Of course it’s right! I always had a tail silly,> Kayla’s subconscious seemed to laugh, though it was speaking with Vyrn’s voice. <We need to hurry and get back so Gran and the others aren't worried!>
“Gran and… what?” she wondered, confused, as her mind flashed images of the young captain of the skyship. Kayla’s mind felt like it was being hammered as the new memories and images were popping in.
“Have to… ug…” Kayla panted. She held her head with one hand and her loose pants with the other. She quickly shuffled back to her room and gasped as she looked around. “What’s going on!?” she quietly exclaimed. All around her room there seemed to be multiple holes in the air. They were all crackling with green energy and through them, Kayla would see a familiar orchard.
“That’s… That’s impossible!” she moaned and looked around. She saw her computer was still on and the screen seemed to be radiating a green glow. “I have to stop this!” She hurried over to the computer as fast as her shorter legs could manage.
Another tingle of energy ran through Kayla as she moved. With each step she took, the world around her seemed to get bigger and bigger. Her body wobbled a bit as she felt dizzy from her shrinking form. “I need to stop this!” she repeated as she shrunk and she saw her chair become massive before her. A small whimper escaped her as she looked up and around. “How can I… the plug!” The realization struck and searched under the desk for the power cord.
Fueled by determination, she carefully tried to make her way over to the power cable. She held up her too-large pants with both hands while she attempted to waddle her smaller form over to her goal. “Oh man this is awkward,” she blushed as she tried to keep her decency.
As she got about halfway to her goal, she felt a tingle on her chest. The familiar itching struck her upper torso, making her stop in her tracks. “Ugh what is going on now?” She groaned and pulled her larger shirt away with one hand as she kept her pants up with another. Her face reddened when she saw the white scales slowly moving down her chest and smoothing it out. “Oh,” Kayla chuckled nervously.
A loud tearing noise behind her quickly drew her attention. “What was that!?” she exclaimed and saw the holes that were in her room were starting to expand and become larger. Kayla could see more of the orchard, and a beautiful blue sky above it. The holes seemed to be beckoning her.
<Come on! Let’s go, we have to hurry!> her subconscious voice called out once more, <And why am I wearing these silly rags?> That thought echoed loudly. He was a great and powerful dragon. Why was he trying to dress like a human?
As if sensing the thought, Kayla’s shirt started to give off a green glow. She held her head once again as the thoughts and memories clashed in her subconsciousness. “Clothing… dragon… humans?” she muttered in a daze as her shirt suddenly shrank into green energy that shifted and seemed to reform around her neck. The glow vanished and Kayla felt a choker appearing around her neck, with a purple crystal hanging from it.
<Ah that’s much better, and I found my necklace too!> A happy chuckle seemed to escape Kayla's mouth. “Oh man I would be in so much trouble if I lost this!” she said happily, tapping it lightly.
Kayla froze for a moment as she quickly tried to regain her senses. “What, what is happening to my mind!? I’m not Vyrn! I’m not… Vyrn…” she panted heavily, trying to keep her mind together.
Looking over at the plug, she gulped and tried to proceed closer. “If I can stop my computer, hopefully this will fix it,” she said daring to hope while reaching for the plug. She smiled in relief, she could just reach it! “Okay just need to unplug and,” she was cut off the moment her hand made contact. A jolt of electricity ran through her body.
“AAAAAHHHHH!” she cried, having trouble letting go from the plug. A small explosion erupted and launched the changing human back through the air and onto the floor next to one of the portals. “Ow. Ow. That… barely hurt at all?” Her body tingled while she stood back up, but she showed no signs of injury from the shock or blast.
“How am I okay from that?” she asked and looked down at her body. As she inspected herself, she realized something was missing.
“Whew, glad to be free from those constricting leg garments,” she smiled, then frowned. “Wait that means I’m…” Fear struck her once more and she looked down. “NAKED!?” She blushed at first but then noticed that there was nothing she had to worry about. “Oh,” she said as she saw the smoothed out scales that were down there.
Kayla stared blankly for a moment and then her eyes widened for a moment as she felt a strange shift inside her body. A slight yelp escaped her and she jumped as she could feel something odd shift inside her. A small blush formed on her face as she came to the quick realization that she was now a he.
“Well that is,” he gulped and heard the tear once more. Kayla looked over at the tears and saw they were getting bigger. The succulent smell of apples wafted through and made him hungry.
“Oh they smell good! Perfectly ripe!” he grinned and leapt for the hole in reality. However, much to his surprise, he would smack himself against an invisible wall.He groaned as he cartoonishly hung there for a moment before falling to the ground and landing on his butt. The little dragon yelped and reached back to rub it.
“What the heck was that about?” he huffed and felt annoyed to be denied his prize. Looking at another hole, he walked over and gave it a tap. “Hello? Anybody home?” he called as his hand knocked against the invisible force. “What the heck? Why can’t I go home?” He growled, then froze. “Home? Wait, this is… home?” He looked around at the room and saw that it was looking more and more unfamiliar. “What is going on here?” he asked, his hands starting to tingle.
“Hmm?” He held them out so he could look them over. Kayla would see his fingers were slowly starting to get smaller and look a bit stubbier. His eyes widened in shock when he saw his middle and ring fingers were fusing into a single digit. “Ooohhh,” he chuckled in realization when he saw that his nails were turning purple and growing out slightly, curving forward into a pair of claws.
Kayla gave his stubbier digits a wiggle and a very amused chuckle came out of him. “Were my claws always this adorable?” he giggled as the same tan scales that covered his torso were moving across them and spreading to his wrists. A tickling feeling struck his palms next and made him laugh a bit more. “Stop, stop!” he laughed and turned his hands over to see what was going on. Several more chuckles came out as he saw spots on his palms and under his fingers swell as they got rougher and formed into protective pads.
The tickling died down and Kayla sighed in relief. “Well, that was weird.” He looked back down at his hands. The scales were creeping up his arms were the same reddish sales that covered most of his body.
Kayla heard the sound of cracking once more. This time it came from the floor as grass and flowers were growing in through her carpet. “Oh, how pretty, I just Know Lyria will love these!” He reached over and found that he could easily pick the temporal flowers. Visions of the blue haired, young lady was starting to fill his mind. He envisioned her being quite happy with the bouquet of flowers.
“Perfect!’ Kayla smiled, holding up his prize. He looked at it with eyes sparkling with excitement. “This should be...enough?” He felt odd and confused, with something nagging at the back of his mind. “Ugh what’s going on? Something feels off.” He looked around once more as his mind was getting foggy. “I think i may have gotten too excited,” he sighed and sat down. His tail swayed and brushed across the grass.
It was hard for him to think straight as several names were echoing in his mind, but they were not sparking any memories. “Who… who are these people?” he asked himself. None of them seemed to register. “Gran and I met so many people on our travels, are they important? Weird to randomly start thinking of them.”
Vyrn gave a small yawn and looked around the room. “Is it time for a nap?” Several more cracks started to form in the ceiling of and warm sunlight fell on the dragon. “Maybe,” he said, growing more sleepy.
Another tickling struck the dragon, this time on his feet, and he started to laugh again. “Hey hey cut it out!” He set the flowers down so they would not get ruined as his body shook from laughter. He clenched his eyes and kicked his feet to hopefully alleviate what was making his laugh. “C-c-cut it out! Whatever that is!” he giggled.
As Vyrn squirmed in his laughter, his toes started to fuse together. It was much like his fingers only this time he was left with three stubby digits on each foot. More tan colored scales slowly moved across his feet, and the rougher, protective pads formed on the bottoms. The tickling slowly faded away as his nails grew sharper and curved into tiny claws.
“Whew, what the heck caused that to happen?” He looked around and only saw grass, flowers, and more grass. He quickly looked at the bottoms of his feet but didn’t see the scales moving across his shorter legs. “Nothing there either. Man this has been a weird day,” he sighed again.
The cracks and the holes fully spread throughout the area and the old room was no more. The tiny dragon was standing in a sunny field. The smell of apples drifted over from the orchard where he remembered enjoying a hearty meal of the delicious fruit.
“Maybe one of those apples was not fully ripe?” he pondered. For the small dragon, the name “Kayla” echoed in the back of his mind while he thought things over. “Why do I keep thinking about that name? Who is Kayla and why does she feel important?” he huffed in annoyance.
“HEY VYRN!” a voice familiar to him called out. Vyrn stopped thinking about the name and looked in the sound’s direction. He gasped in surprise, then smiled with relief as he saw two figures were moving towards him.
“Gran! Lyria!” he called out. As he happily watched them approach; a small tug struck his backside. The rest of the red scales moved in and swept across his back, completely covering the dragon. The final changes struck as two thick purple wings grew from his spine. They flattened out and shaped to look like a three fingered hand.
Vyrn picked up the flowers he collected and flew right over to his friends. “Gran! Lydia!” he laughed and hovered near the two.
“Hey buddy, have a nice meal?” The young blonde armored man chuckled and patted his friend on the head.
Vyrn nodded repeatedly. “Yep yep! And I also went and picked these for you!” He turned to the blue haired girl and presented the flowers.
“Why thank you Vyrn! These are beautiful!” she giggled and gave them a sniff. “They smell very nice, thank you.”
Gran chuckled. “Well then, we should go get back to the others. Lunchtime is over buddy. We have a lot more work to do.” He turned and started to walk off, and Lydia nodded and walked alongside him.
“Okay okay,” he sighed slightly at the idea of work, but flew along next to his friends. “Oh Gran? Does the name, Kayla mean anything to you?” the dragon asked curiously
“Kayla?” he pondered. “I don’t think so.”
“I can’t recall anyone by that name either,” Lydia added. “Is there some reason you know that name?”
“I… don’t know. For some reason, it just came to my mind but I can’t tell why,” he sighed. “Well, I am sure it’s not that important, right? If it is, I am sure the reason will come to me someday.” The dragon smiled once more as the three went off on their adventure.
Finally getting myself back in the groove.
