The strong smell of burning lumber filled the air that night; the first evening in months that a good nights sleep was even a possibility. But just because something may be possible doesn't always mean it will occur.
Camari tossed another log onto the fire like it was as light as the feather falling from a birds wing; whom was leaving their nest for the first time. With the flames dancing against the lumber it reduced the threat of unwanted predators trying to get into the camp.
"You always were a fool."
It was almost like Camari had finally lost the little sanity she had left by talking to herself. It is often a sign that one will have conversation with themselves if their sanity is slipping. In reality she was speaking to an injured man who was asleep by the fire. Blood drenched bandages covered his rib cage while burns ran a course up the side of his body. This woman may be rough around the edges but with good intentions at heart.
The mans body was staying safe from the cold all around them by the flames dancing before them on the fading pieces of dried out wood. Fast asleep but lucky to be alive, it was hard to believe he even survived all that had been thrown at him.
A wedding ruined, a war against those he cared for the most, losing the place he called home; the list carries on, it all ended him up here.
I'm sure you are curious of the story behind it all right? To bad this is not his story huh? But the story of his sister.
Camari.
In this day and age it wasn't to common for a woman to be out among the men fighting, riding, robbing and killing. Her skills may not be as great as her brothers but she could hold her own just fine. Growing up with only her father for guidance, he wanted to be sure his 'little jewel' was safe from the dangers of the world. Knowing he wouldn't be around forever, no one is. So to be sure that when his time did come he could rest peacefully; he taught her everything she needed to know to survive. Her father's teaching covered many different things, like how to use a bow then a gun at a very young age. This allowed her to hunt for food as well for the people she found on wanted posters without needing someone to provide it for her.
All her father ever taught her is what helped her survive in a world where no one really wanted her in it. Is that good or bad? It's hard to tell. She is still trying to wrap her brain around the fact that she has a brother and even a mother somewhere out there. The twins didn't know the other existed until crossing paths one night in a vicious bar fight. These two were born with matching birth marks on the palms of their hands, of course they never knew this. Amongst the fight the marks were noticed, yet brushed off due to the situation at hand. Pun unintended. The sheriff broke up the bar brawl pretty quickly, throwing them both in a cell for a chill out session.
"I thought my mark was one of a kind but obviously that isn't the case thanks to you, numb nuts."
A passive aggressive tone was thrown to her brother in the cell across from her.
"Jessy. The name is Jessy."
Responding to her in almost the exact same tone as he laid his tired body on the not so comfortable rickety cot provided in this mini cage to rest while he could.
"Not only do you copy my mark but you have to copy my tone too?" This silly little argument went on for hours before the two talked normally and discovered that they truly were twins; sharing stories of their parents with each other. Just before dawn a loud crash woke the whole sheriffs office in a not so lovely way.
"That must be my way out of here." Jessy quickly grabbed onto the bars to try to see who was arguing with the law.
Rayna!
It was his dear friend. Who brought almost the whole kingdom to be sure he was released, she had thrown a stack of cash onto the sheriffs desk. It didn't take long before his cell was opened for him to regain his freedom.
"Hey! What about me!?"
Camari yelled after them all with no avail. She could easily get herself out but was hoping she wouldn't have to do so, yet again.
"Useless man."
With little no effort she picked her cell lock, slipping through the back door as quiet as a mouse. Taking her freedom back for herself. Now I'm sure you are curious of how these two ended back up together right? Well, we are getting to that.
News traveled across the land about the great war of The Kingdom; A tale of betrayal, death and heart ache. Again, a story for a different day but this war is what brought these two back together at the end of the day.
Camari was in her own little world as she watched the flames continue their mesmerizing dance in the fire before her.
"Gives you flashbacks doesn't it?"
She snapped out of her daze to turn her attention to her now awake brother, laying on the dew covered grass beside her.
"The fires rage spread so fast, destroying so much in such a short amount of time."
She noticed her brother was starting to get into his own head about everything that has happen. The war was over a year ago, peace was brought to himself and the land before him only for another to spark due to vengeance, Something he wanted no part of. The twins may have been polar opposite from each other but they always shared one thing; Morals.
'Never try to be better than anyone else. Just try to be better than the person you were yesterday'.
Use the pain to learn, grow and thrive. Jessy thought he had finally found peace after losing everything he loved; a wife, a home, a kingdom.
The person who brought false peace to him was known as, Auk. She was his dear friend, he always kept her safe, helped her grow an empire and how to snipe someone with little to no effort. In the end it was revealed that he was used like a toy on Christmas day and thrown away once the batteries died; he was watching another war raging. A small empire verses the large Kingdom, he tried hard to prevent it all wanting no one to be injured in the cross fire of those with revenge filled hearts.
"There's no changing what happened that day or any other day. All we can do is move on."
While speaking in hopes to distract her brother as she stoked the fire.
"I got some beans for you to eat, you need energy to start healing."
Once the two filled their bellies they slowly drifted off to sleep under the star filled sky.
The next morning Camari jumped from her sleep to see her brother being dragged away by a man on horseback. A tight noose around Jessy's throat, he struggled as his already injured body was getting tortured by the hot sand on the road. She quickly ran to her horse jumping onto the strong animals back with no saddle or bridle.
" Let's go, Sitka!"
She shouted as she pushed her bare feet into the horses sides. Shooting like a bullet after her brother, getting closer and closer she saw who was harming Jessy. He has many names but his most common one is Mist, the man who caused the war in the first place.
"Just hold on!! I'm coming!"
Camari shouted in hopes Jessy could hear her. Stitches was struggling to catch up which filled her heart with fear that this may be the end for him, the brother she only just found. But then; Boom! Mist was forced to stop dead in his tracks. An arrow was easily seen in the ground in front of him. The smoke cleared to reveal a dynamite arrow. In the blink of an eye the three were surround by at least fifteen people on horseback.
It was The Kingdom.
Using this distraction to her advantage Camari ran right to her brother cutting the rope from his throat. Coughing and gasping for air Jessy moved himself away from his attacker to get himself collected. Gazing up to the woman on the back of a beautiful stallion, he may have not known the animal but he knew it's owner.
Rayna, The Kingdoms ruler. She soon began to speak, her tone was gentle yet firm.
"You are in the wrong Territory, Mist. This country side is under our protection. That includes the people who settled down here. Now you and your twisted views, Get. Out."
The man laughed like he had barely any sanity left.
"This is far from over you fake Queen. The Kingdom will fall. Now move your useless followers"
With that one comment every single person surrounding him aimed their guns right at this fool. With a gentle wave of her hand the guns are lowered, allowing Mist to run away.
Camari slowly helped her brother get back onto his feet as soon as everything settled down around them.
"You didn't have to do that."
Jessy stated to her. Rayna turned her gaze to the twins standing before her only to utter two simple words.
"Welcome Home."
