She continued to sit quietly with the beast, stroking him as they looked out together into the night – neither seemed to have noticed him yet, and Luke took the opportunity to get a better look at his unexpected rescuer… She was wearing a simple travelling tunic of dull browns and beige, the colours of the wastelands; the outfit did not serve to flatter her figure at all and Luke thought it a shame, for beneath the ugly practicality of it, she was actually quite beautiful. Like her face, she seemed all gentle curves and delicate features – why she would want to hide beneath such an unflattering veneer, he didn’t understand. Somehow, it made him a little sad.

This such a great piece! Between the bleak, mysterious atmosphere and the tall, ragged figure in the foreground, ( Luke, I gather) it reminds me of the fable "Appointment In Samara". For those somehow unfamiliar with this gem, it goes, briefly, like this: A young man living in the city of Damascus is horrified one morning to see the figure of Death staring at him across the marketplace. The panic stricken man flees the city, riding his horse hard and fast, right across the desert to Samara. At nightfall, he comes to a well, and standing by the well, waiting for him, was Death. "No!" The young man cried, "this cannot be! For I escaped you in Damascus!"
"I, too, was surprised to see you in Damascus," Death replied, gently laying his hand on the young man's shoulder. "For my appointment with you was always to be here, in Samara."

Thank you so much, I really do appreciate it <333 Heh, there's even a similar "fatedness" in my story, although I depicted that aspect already ( https://www.furaffinity.net/view/36675368/ )
