yeah, one you have your pen tool path layed out right click and choose "make selection", now you have a selection you can fill with you "dark/shade" color.
switching the layers property to "multiply" caused the darkness to be applied to the layer beneath it
then toggle down the "opacity" until its the right amount of darkness for you
