"In April 1846, a bright light emanated from the waters of Higo Province for several nights in a row. When an official came to investigate, they were met with the amabie, who introduced itself and foretold of a six-year bumper crop. Additionally, it stated that should an outbreak of disease occur, a picture of the amabie should be shown to as many people as possible, so that it may protect them from harm. It then returned to the sea. This yokai enjoyed a healthy resurgence in popularity thanks to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic."
