A few weeks ago I ran the canned adventure Sunless Citadel for my D&D group. When they got to the lower levels and fought against the bugbear gardeners one of my players crited against a bugbear. I use a really old crit (and fumble) chart to determine the precise effects because it's generally more fun that way. The result on the table was "massive brain damage", since the player was using a crossbow I ruled that she lobotomized the bugbear. Since this is D&D and it's supposed to be fun, I ruled that this had the effect of making the bugbear basically into an overgrown toddler who really enjoys, and is good at, gardening. By that time the party had been joined by Erky, so I had the NPC take the bugbear in. It's not stated in the booklet that Erky is even from Oakhurst, but I decided that he went adventuring because he was afraid of commitment, and had left Nanny when she started talking about marriage. So when they all got back to town, he married her pretty much on the spot (two years as a prisoner to goblins can really put your life into perspective).
Today I got inspired to write a short, fun little story about Buggy and his new life as a gardener. While not strictly anthro, bugbears are pretty damned furry! (The thumbnail is courtesy of Google images)
