“Shurian shipyard to all Republic units, we have identified a large imperial cruiser in orbit. All ships in the area, please respond!” A distressed voice alerted over the telecom, urging the wolf to respond to the signal.
“This is Grey Jedi Matthew Woodward of the Republic, I am in range of Shuria and on my way.”
Matthew was on his way back from a small-scale battle against the treacherous Sith Empire in the Outer Rim. This resulted with the fleet retreating, giving the Republic another victory in their siege. This celebration was short-lived once he received an urgent call from the nearby planet Shuria. Instead of making his way back to Alderaan, he headed towards the signal to help with the situation. With the push of a few buttons and the pull of a lever by his side, his starfighter entered hyperspace with a new assignment: defend Shuria.
Once he reached the planet, he pushed the lever back up as he entered the orbit, slowly descending down to the surface to land at the main outpost he had received the call from. Shuria was a small tropical world sprawling with life, vegetation, and most certainly, water. Despite being heavily populated by the natives, the inhabitants were a tribal civilisation, disconnected from the rest of the galaxy.
Once he landed on an open pad, the wolf noticed peripherally, a unique-looking figure walking towards his starfighter; Perhaps a civilian of the planet. With the push of a button, the window hatch on the side unlocked, allowing him to push it off so he could get out. After unblocking the belt on his seat, he swung his legs over to the side and jumped off his ship before walking to the incoming stranger, getting a better look at them.
“I suppose you’re Matthew,” she said to the young wolf.
“Yes I am. And you are...?”
“I’m Draya Dagger...welcome to Shuria!” greeted the female, both her arms crossed behind her back. She was a rather tall creature, at least half a foot higher than Matthew. She had grey and blue scale-like skin covering her body and a long, thick tail, with glowing yellow eyes that had a black sclera, along with a black slit for pupils instead of the familiar circular shape he was used to seeing.
“Pleased to meet you,” he said with a soft smile as he extended his right hand out to shake hers, only to see her look down at him with a confused expression on her face, implying she didn’t understand what he was doing. Shurians were not familiar with the traditional types of greetings the rest of the galaxy used. To avoid the moment becoming even more awkward between the pair, Matthew cut right to the chase.
“Uhh, so I was told about an imperial cruiser in orbit?”
“Yes, come this way...” Draya ordered.
As they made their way out of the hangar’s entrance, Matthew was hit with the warm temperature that was present across the planet; It wasn’t the kind of weather he was used to back home on Alderaan, where it was much cooler. His feet pressed down on the sandy beach as he scanned the environment, admiring its lush jungles and crystal-clear ocean. She escorted him into a dense cluster of trees, where they would have to pass through the local tribe of Shurians to get to their destination. He saw many of the reptilian creatures going about with their business, carrying recources and cooking food while the much smaller children played in a nearby pond. Small wooden cabins were built around where specialists would do their deeds for the community, and large hives inside a cave that housed many of their inhabitants. Several adults of the tribe watched him with wonder in their slit-pupil eyes as he followed Draya, unfamiliar with the wolf and his species. It wasn’t very often Shuria had visitors entering their main land. The planet was primarily used as a fuel stop for travellers who were about to embark on a long journey. They never entered the main land and interfered with the Shurians’ culture.
“I’ve gathered some volunteers from the outpost to help us with this confrontation,” the female stated to him. “Just in case things start to get messy.”
“Well, lets just hope we can sort this out quickly.” He kept himself behind her long tail, watching the loose sashes of her dark-grey tunic bob and swing from every step as he noticed the pair of lightsabers swinging from the belt around her waist.
“So...you’re a Jedi?” he asked.
“Was,” the Shurian responded. “I left a few years ago and decided to come back here...it just wasn’t for me.”
She stepped out of the jungle and back onto the beach with Matthew behind her, turning back to face him with her hand pointed to the sky.
“Here it is...”
The canine looked up to see a Harrower-class battle cruiser floating in the sky, relatively high up. He tilted his head to the side as he looked at the triangular ship with confusion, unsure of why they weren’t moving.
“How long have they been there?” He asked.
“Roughly about an hour or so.”
“That’s odd...would’ve thought they’d have attacked by now,” he told the Shurian, keeping his eyes on the ginormous ship. Before the situation could become more dire, Matthew pulled out a comlink from one of the pouches on his belt, bringing it towards his mouth and pressing a button on it that made a beeping sound.
“This is Matthew Woodward. I’m on the planet Shuria and there seems to be an imperial battle cruiser in orbit. We need reinforcements as soon as possible.”
Shortly after sending out that message, another male nearby alerted the pair with binoculars in his hand.
“Something just left their ship,” he warned.
Taking the binoculars off the man, Draya aimed it up to the sky and looked through them to see a transport vehicle descending to the surface.
“Right on time...” the wolf muttered.
“Get the rest of the tribe back in their hives and keep them in there...things might get serious,” she ordered a male Shurian passing by, while the other men on the beach began setting up an anti-spacecraft cannon to shoot down the imposing threat.
“Fire when ready,” she notified the group by her side, keeping her gaze focused on the incoming ship. Matthew remained still with his right hand down by the side of his belt, hovering over his lightsaber cautiously to prepare for battle. Expecting the Sith to fire down first, he was thrown off when the high-pitched sound of the cannon on his left fired , landing a critical hit on the enemy ship and sending it crashing into the ocean. The group cheered, thinking they were victorious. However, Matthew was suspicious.
“That was way too easy...something’s not right,” he said to Draya, concerned about the situation. “Is there any chance we could check the wreckage?”
“Perhaps...But you’ll need this.” She sunk her hand into her pocket and pulled out a rebreather for him to use, handing it over to him.
“What about you?” He asked.
“I don’t need one.”
The wolf was confused by her response. Surely she couldn’t hold her breath for that long, right?
