Ray "Chappie" Chapman, shortstop for the Cleveland Indians, died in a game against the New York Yankees after being hit in the head by pitcher Carl Mays. In the twilight game, Mays heard the sound of the ball cracking Chappie's skull and thought it was the bat making contact, so proceeded to field the ball and throw to first. Chappie Chapman died 12 hours later at a New York City hospital, and to this day is the only Major League baseball player to die as a result of being hit by a pitch.
His body was brought back to Cleveland and interred at Lake View Cemetery. From a poor family, Indians fans paid for his headstone with nickles and dimes, and to this day, fans continue to leave baseball memorabilia and shiny nickles and dimes on his stone both out of respect for the man, and as good luck for their team.
