I like your point, there is a reason why humans are on the top of the food chain, its not because we are omnivores its because we have the intelligence to outsmart something is potentially dangerous, sure a deer can run but that is all they'll do. A human will run, hide and find something to defend themselves with or try to block the thing trying to hurt them... Our brain function and capacity is greater than an animals, ranging from more complexemotions, reasoning, and problem solving. Yes animals have these but not in the mass that we do, theirs are quite minimal.
That is why people come first in society, a person can become an immediate source of help of any kind an animal maybe welcome as food, or working but require extra training and resources and there is always a risk of the animal being rabid and feral.

A deer or similar animal would have a much better chance escaping a predator like a lion or wolf than a human would. Of course, we avoid such situations, so we lack the selection pressure to evolve the heightened senses and physical power of the deer. Even the simplest of creatures are extremely complex beings, with brains far beyond our understanding. We may be at the top of the (unstable) food chain, but we are not masters of our world, nor of any form of life in it. There is a lot to admire about and feel in common with other animals. For some, that feeling is strong enough to make them believe, on a deep level, that they are one with the animal. It seems to often accompany a lack of identification with other humans.
Like the highly successful rat is a pest to us, we are pests to many species in this world. In fact, we are more like a natural disaster. It's funny to imagine that some more highly, mentally evolved alien species might land on Earth and treat us the same way we treat other animals, for the same reasons.
People with severe mental/physical disabilities should be used as food

And that is the catalyst of your argument most animals will leaving another of its own kind to die, a female lioness does not protect her cubs from being eaten from a male lion. Select few species of animals will help one another its all on their own. Humans however have the humanity to care for one another no matter how helpless they are. The mentally retarded who suffer while awkward in the eyes of the social norm are usually very intelligent and are resourceful.
Animals cannot think beyond what instincts tell them. You apparently are among them.
