Step 1: Cream the butter and sugar
No, you dirty minded weirdo, not that kind of cream.
Anyway, soften the margarine (I used a 50/50 trans-fat free butter margarine blend) and add the sugar/brown sugar.
Using the method of your choice, cream them together until they're light and fluffy. You can use an electric mixer if you want but I always do this part by hand.
