I can recommend "Lampropeltis triangulum elapsoides", "Pantherophis guttatus" (a lot of different beautiful morphs), "Elaphe dione" and my favorite "Lampropeltis getulus californiae"!(｡•̀ᴗ-)✧
All of them grow small, they have no problems with food, most often they are tame, not at all poisonous and they do not need huge terrariums/containers, there will be enough container 60x30 centimeters for an adult!
These are the perfect snakes for a beginner(◡ ω ◡)

What would be a good food for them?

specialty stores sell frozen rodents, but you can also feed them live

Moral standards....dont...like live feeding....plus dont want risk of the prey fighting back
