The Great Prince was never a bad dad, he just wasn't really used to being a father to Bambi even after his wife passed away. When a father is often away from his children mostly for genuine ways to support his family, he would have to muster a lot of time and effort to parent his children if their mother is not available at the time. It's normal for fathers to work more often than to teach children, they just also need to manage time without getting stressed.
By the way, the Great Prince's position is obvious. He IS the Great Prince of the Forest. He has bigger responsibilities for the entire forest than spending time with Bambi but he has hopes that his wife would raise Bambi until their kid becomes old enough to hold the Great Prince's position. In the end, Bambi ends up like his father, carrying a burden for the forest animals while his new wife lays their new kid.

Even if he wanted to raise Bambi, there would be serious circumstances that required the Great Prince's attention. As Bambi grows, he will understand what's like to be his father. Nevertheless, both Bambi and his father at least have joy in various moments, especially when they're together.
