The fern had experienced something like this before, and a deep foreboding filled its rhizome as the building went skyward and, at the top of its arc, began to discorporate.
Amid shards of pot and fragments of building, the fern landed on a patch of fertile mud near part of the [Stranger's River], shaded from the Sun by the bridge. There its rhizome lay until, buried by mud, it cautiously extended a few fiddleheads to get the lay of the land.
As years went by, the fern and its spores thrived, creating a bank of lush ferns along the protected bank of the river.
And no one ever pissed on it again.
