Roland's a decent boxer, it's a good way to let out some of his aggression in a more constructive and controlled fashion, not to mention, prize-fighting can pay quite well. Being a rather robust little mutant has its perks, as he can withstand a lot of abuse, and it takes a lot to knock him out.
If he hadn't found work as a mercenary he'd probably try to make his living in the ring.
