Perchance to Dream R1 - RPG Mechanics
Perchance to Dream is intentionally written with applicability towards a first-person dungeon crawler like Etrian Odyssey(or Persona Q, if you insist). 5 heroes in a party with 6 slots, wandering through dungeons drawing maps and getting murdered by the wildlife. For fun! And profit.
Here we take a brief aside from the actual novel to look at character classes for the main five, as well as noting where the novel would vary from an actual RPG implementation. Today's Installment includes:
Marion - The Catalyst of Change - Artwork by
ailuranthropy
Travis - The Spirit of Travel - Artwork Commissioned from
kyrio
Cora - The Muse of Color - Artwork by meeeee
Bastian - The Aspirant of Force - Artwork by Kitsune64
Mrs. Monty - The Trickster of Insight - Artwork by Equestria-Previals
Monty doesn't get a Force Boost/Break right now, because the EO ones for her related classes(Landshneckt and Nightseeker) aren't entirely inspiring, and I feel there could be something better done that I haven't thought of yet.
Feast your eyes!
Chapter 7 will be coming soon, with the boss of our first dungeon. Woooooo!

Actually no! I'm paraphrasing the EO designer, but the general principle behind having a 5 person party(so 2 in the front 3 in the back, or vice versa) is a sense that you can't completely fill the party. There's always a tradeoff in terms of what classes you leave behind, and which parts of the party you focus on.
The sixth slot can be temporarily filled by summons and guest party members, but for the most part it's 5.
In our case here, the Story Fixed party would be Bastian(Tank) and Monty(Frontline DPS) in the front, with Marion(Healer/Support), Travis(Backline DPS), and Cora(Elemental Mage) in the back.

So there's a chance that a certain species of procyonid could join for a few chapters? Cool.
Your logic reminds me of Rimworld's system of choosing colonists to optimize the average skillset. Sure, you might want a really good doctor, but said doctor is incapable of manual labor, so you end up having to ditch her in favor of a less effective one who can actually help build the base's hospital. You always have to make sacrifices one way or another.
