Making a picture - Step Three
Step three and I bring the inks out a bit. This step is probably a tad redundant as the character is going to be black, but I still feel better doing it. I ink with a Japanese brushpen that I got from Jetpens. It has a real brush tip and gives me a lot of line weight variation. It sucks inking wings with them though. I really need to find my curve ruler before I do anymore wings.
I also take this moment to make sure all the lines work out and to try and correct any minor mistakes I may have made anywhere, usually by covering it up with a thicker line or what have you. One trick to see if your proportions look okay is to flip your picture and eyeball it backwards. Often times any glaring proportion mistakes will make themselves more readily known that way.

As an aside, I'm often put out by artists who don't put much thought into line weight when they ink. Knowing how to do variable light weight inking can really improve an image, although it takes a ton of practice and I'm nowhere near a master of it myself.

I've learned more and more as time goes by that line weight really adds a professional look to your drawing. When I look at my semi-fruitful attempts at line weight now and compare them to my '3 point mouse driven no variation' ink lines from when I started, I see a huge difference.
Thanks a BUNCH for putting this one in particular out here, Gen--It's great to see how you went from sketch to inks and what you did with line weight.
