I made this in May. I found about 10 discarded vinyl records in my apartment’s dump area and I felt compelled to make various signage and hang them around town. I intend to hammer them on wood light posts on busy intersections. I’m kind of ashamed that Pride month is almost over and it’s still not up, but it doesn’t go away after the month is over.
I plan on painting a BLM sign, Black Trans Lives sign, a social distancing sign, and maybe a couple more. I used layers of acrylic paints and added two layers of varnish. Hopefully it will hold up in the Florida heat... It’s been sweltering lately and I know vinyl is known to warp in heat.
Fight for us. This means, acknowledge trans people exist. We are a minority that are either invisible or shamed for simply existing. Trans people still struggle to find stable work, afford healthcare, and have a general state of safety compared to the general population. Black transgender people experience this even more disproportionately and also have to navigate racism and multiple forms of prejudice. Everyone deserves safety, access to healthcare, and the ability to work no matter their identity or presentation. Fight to change legislation that not only recognizes transgender people’s lives and struggles, but helps trans people. Legislation that makes abuse, hate crimes, and murder against transgender people as serious as any other crime against human being. We need action. We need visibility. Love. Understanding. Acceptance.
