sorry, i did a paper on Japanese swordsmithing some time ago, and once a word has lodged its self in your head it keeps finding its way out....the Tsuka is the, typically silk wrapped, grip of a Katana, the ornamental metal guard is called the Tsuba, the hard wooden scabbard is called a Saya..there are alot of parts i am not bothering to mention, but basically a katana served a purpose similar to the banners carried into battle by the knights of the dark ages.. the colors, animals, symbols, all denoted your family, wealth, rank, and class...like the term royal blue...thus named, because if you weren't royalty, you weren't allowed to wear it... If your blade was ornamental you were typically an elite, as flashy blades really have no place on the battle field...
None of this really matters of course, people tend to think of a sword in four parts, handle, guard, blade, and sheath and for the most part they are currect...the Japanese were a little more...anal...about naming and giving significance to every part of their swords..
