Iski's tail was consumed by a parasite, one that latches on to a creature and can surge it's body with hormones to influence its mind and achieve its goals. The symbiote is intelligent, speaking to external parties when needed, but can communicate to Iski through a shared nervous system.

The parasite will use it's host to gather genetic material, using innate chemical processes to carve out the best genes of this material to store until it is time.

Once it has enough, it will divide, creating a new parasite that can detach and find a new host.

Removal is impossible once the parasite has attached fully without killing both the parasite and the host. Iski is alright with this, he's getting used to the little guy.
