The middle ages. The frozen poles. A long-forgotten desert empire. A bleak gray metal landscape.
Evil lurks in all corners, in all times. Its hordes are too mighty, too numerous, too cunning to be faced down by any ordinary mortal.
Fortunately, I am no ordinary mortal.
They say this power I wield is the same as that of my enemies. That the rage and the bloodthirst will turn me into one of them. That one day I will be a demon as well.
Perhaps so.
But not before I've wiped out every trace of evil from the pages of history myself, uprooted the king of all evil and taken his throne from him by force.
I am a warlock. By blade, by magic, and by lead, I will bring an end to all who stand in my way.
So, real talk for a second.
I LOVE Project Warlock. It's one of my favorite games and it only came out in December '18. I love the Doomlike genre as a whole, but Project Warlock immediately caught my eye for promising a combination of magic AND guns in a very modern game. The high-quality sprites and the incredible aesthetic convinced me to grab it. It looks great, it sounds great, it plays great. Special note to the shotgun, which is so damn satisfying to use: It does tons of damage at short range with a low rate of fire as you'd expect, but you get the ultra-satisfying click of cocking the barrel and the sound of the empty casing hitting the floor. It's one of the few weapons that has to reload, and the game remembers, if you switch away from it, that you have to finish the animation when you switch back. And there's a double-barreled version for the really nasty threats.
I played it through and then immediately started on a harder difficulty. I still haven't beaten it on the hardest difficulty but it's such a fun challenge that I'm going to keep trying. It has so much replay value from the character building and gun customization aspect. I still haven't tried every possibility for character customization. I even learned how to speedrun it just because I wanted to find a way to keep playing the game.
It's on sale right now on Steam until July 9th. And it just got ported to consoles on the 11th. It's an amazing game. Go buy the damn thing! And have a grand ol' time blasting your way through a Doomlike that knows exactly what makes the classics good, and what it can add to make them better.
In celebration of learning about the port, I wanted to get a picture like this from Niko. It took a few attempts at the raffle to land the slot, but here we are.
This isn't canon to Code/Kh'tall in any way, shape or form (maybe a halloween costume for the former) but I don't care because it looks awesome.
Besides, is there any time that badass longcoats don't make everything better?
So, again, go buy Project Warlock if you like Doomlikes or fast-paced FPS games at all. It's very much worth it. It has never crashed. I haven't found a single bug. It's a wonderful project made by a software company (Buckshot Software) that's actually just one guy. It's the kind of craftsmanship you can only get from someone super-dedicated to a project with a vision, just like a game such as ADOM.
So yeah. Go play it!

Yeah, Kirsten's episode feels a bit thrown-together towards the end. Urd, meanwhile, has three fun powers and a pretty good arsenal. Even if the dynamite is just like the dynamite in PW1 and will absolutely kill you immediately if you are too close to it. Urd also has a pretty good variety of environments in her levels, she definitely had the most fun sections of the game.
Yeaah, Kirsten's chapter is a fun concept but it feels a tad bit undercooked at times. The one thing that does seem to carry on between the two chapters is that they both have some spectacular views lol, in particular the train level in Ch2 and some of the later levels in Ch3... And also the enemy gals. Shame Ch3 only has the Sentinels, while Ch2 has like 3 different elves lol
Oh that level transition was really good, can only imagine how long it took her to get there tho lol. My other favorite transition is when she grabs a truck by the end of a level (the Exit button is literally on the truck's door lol) and next level the truck is crashed sideways... She's not a good driver, it seems
Oh yeah, not a full on level transition, but there's a toggle somewhere in the train level that changes the canyons outside with snowy mountains, that one was so freaking cool!

Urd is stuck in a child's body, so trying to drive a truck is going to be difficult. The train one is pretty similar where you go from that to the crashed train in the mountains. Never let Urd behind the wheel of anything.
I hadn't noticed the background change on the trains though. That's definitely a cool effect!
