As the full nighttime sky had finally arrived, the two young Dreamkeepers were walking down the street and admiring what Anduruna looked like at this time. While Silas had brought his own notebook about power users and their powers, Bryce had brought his own with all his own miscellaneous content. Ready and waiting in his large pocket on the pant leg of his shorts should a sudden memory present itself.
Silas walked with his hands in his jacket pockets and smiled happily as his forked tail wagged around to signify his joyousness. “So? What do you think so far?”
Bryce looked around and saw all sorts of lit up buildings from apartments to small businesses. “I'll admit, I didn't think this is what Anduruna would look like at night. So far so good.”
“Really?” Silas asked him sarcastically with a chuckle. “We're out in the city past a curfew that guys our age would have to obey from our parents to have some fun, and the only thing you care to take notice of are how the buildings look?”
“What?” Bryce said with a shrug. “I think they look pretty.”
“Oh Spirits.” Silas chuckled again and palmed his forehead. “That's it. I'm gonna show you something that I like to do for fun whenever I get the chance to be rebellious. Come with me.” He began to walk a little faster and Bryce started to keep pace with him. After a few blocks, Bryce could hear what sounded like muffled music coming from around the bend. Once they rounded it, he saw a neon lit two story building and a line of people outside waiting to get in. The neon sign above the entrance read “Envy” in bright green.
“A nightclub?” Bryce said curiously. “Dude, we're not going to try to get into a nightclub are we?”
“Of course not. You have to be eighteen to get in, and not everyone can get in.”
“So why are we here then?”
“You'll see.” Silas led him down a small alleyway until they reached the end. Then he lead him down a narrow passageway to the left of the alleyway's end, and they were just small enough to easily shuffle through without brushing up against the walls. “Once we're old enough we won't have to do this. Mostly because we'll probably be too big to fit through, but because we'll be able to get in line to get in.” Bryce believed that Silas knew where he was going so he didn't question him at first. Only after they existed the passageway and entered another alley did he finally ask him something.
“So why did we come here?”
Silas held up his index finger to his lips and talked quietly. “We're next to the building that's right next to the nightclub. They don't guard this part of the club.” He crouched down and waved Bryce over to keep following him, and he crouched down too. “Going down that first alley they don't see us, going through that passageway they don't know about leads us to this other alley. We go down it and boom.” They came up to the outer wall of the Envy nightclub. “We're right next to it.”
Bryce could hear the muffled music being played very loudly from inside and now that they were much closer, it could be made out much easier too. “So you have a sneaky way of getting up close without getting caught huh? That's pretty neat.”
“Oh, we're not done yet.” Silas said with a mischievous grin. “Keep following me. I'll show you where the real fun is.” Leading him down the side of the building while still crouched down, they came up to a metal door that had a ladder on the other side leading up to the roof. “I don't know if it was the owner, previous owner, or someone else who worked here, but they carved the combination to this door's lock right here on the door hinge. When I noticed it and gave it a try, the lock came undone. I freaked out dude! They replaced the door but not the lock. I wrote down and memorized the combination too.” He grabbed the lock and in three quick turns it clicked and unlocked. He opened the door and grabbed hold of the ladder.
“We're going to the roof?” Bryce asked.
“We're going to the roof.” Silas replied.
Grabbing hold of the metal and feeling the coldness brought on by the night air, Bryce felt a gentle rush of exhilaration as he placed one foot after another onto the ladder. He looked up to see Silas nearly to the top. He forked tail wagging with excitement.
The exhilaration began to increase and Bryce couldn’t help but softly giggle with excitement. He believes that this was the feeling of fun that Silas wanted him to have. Of course, this sort of thing still wasn’t allowed but it wasn’t as though they were breaking any laws. It was just a couple of adolescent boys doing something they knew would get them in trouble, but only if they got caught.
Once Bryce made it to the top, he could feel the slight vibration of the music bass on his feet. He then saw Silas over by a short pyramid shaped skylight. Bright color streaks of neon blue, pink and green could be seen shining out from it.
“Come on over.” Silas said softly as he gestured a wave.
Crouching down again, just in case, Bryce made his way over and squinted his right eye slightly when a beam of light went across his face. But once he looked down through the skylight, his eyes opened completely. Down inside the club, he saw Dreamkeepers of multiple different species all dancing together to the rave music. A male butterfly was working the DJ booth with all four of his arms. His purple and blue wings shining like the neon lights from the dark lights aimed at his station.
The music was much easier to hear from the skylight and Bryce couldn’t help but bob his head a little to it. “What’d I tell yah?” Silas said proudly.
Bryce scoffed. “You were right. This is pretty cool.” He sat down with his legs crossed and just enjoyed the view and the music.
Silas followed his lead. “When we’re older, we can get into places like this and enjoy what they’re enjoying.”
“Looks a little...crazy.” He saw a small group shoving each other around but not like they were fighting. He also couldn’t help but notice one woman, a dragon shark hybrid, dancing rather sensually to the beat. “Plus I don’t think I could dance like that. It’d be too embarrassing.”
Silas chuckled. “Why would you be embarrassed? Everyone’s practically dancing the same way. See that’s the cool thing about this place; you can just cut loose and be yourself. That’s what I love most about it.”
Bryce felt a rush of fun and excitement, but he could tell by the look on Silas’s face that his own fun and excitement were much greater than his. This was probably the first time that he brought someone to this little spot of his.
“Have you ever brought Val or Robbie up here?”
Silas grinned and made a gentle scoff. “Nope. They never had an interest in this. I mean they want to see what it looks like inside, but they want their first time to be when they’re old enough to get in.”
Bryce nodded in agreement. “That makes sense. I mean I’ve already gotten to see the inside tonight, but I’d still want to go inside.” He placed his hand on the skylight, feeling the bass vibration on the glass. “I can’t remember if I’ve ever danced...but I wouldn’t mind getting a chance to dance however I felt.”
He felt Silas bump him in the arm with his fist. “There you go. Told you a little something like this is what you needed.”
The two of them decided to stick around for ten more minutes before deciding to leave. Climbing down the ladder and locking it back up, they were just as easily able to sneak back out onto the street. Both were still feeling a little thrill from their mischievous activity as they couldn’t help but giggle among themselves.
As they walked down the street back to the Asola’s home, Bryce took notice of Silas’s notebook sticking slightly out of his coat pocket. “Sooo...how many powers do you got in there?”
“Thirteen.” He said bluntly. “I saw ten here in the city and they were pretty neat.”
“Ten huh? Where did you see the other three?”
Silas held his index finger to his lips. “Those are a secret. I’ll tell you about them later in the future.”
“Why can’t you tell me now?”
Silas shrugged as he smiled at him. “Because it’s more fun that way. Suspense and anticipation makes the reveal all the sweeter.”
Bryce thought about it for a moment. “Fair enough. But I have another question. How exactly were you able to catch people using their powers to write them down in there?”
Silas opened up his arms. “This is Anduruna. Laws are in place and have been for a long time. But someone somewhere is going to use them regardless. Whether it be on accident or they’re trying to get away from the Safety Troopers from using them in the first place.” He pulled the notebook out from his pocket and looked at it. “Once you meet Val and Robbie, I’ll let you see the powers I’ve recorded in here.”
“I’ll hold you to it.” Once they rounded a street corner, a thought popped into Bryce’s head. “Hey, don’t you watch the news too at your home? Shouldn’t you have more powers listed in there than just those thirteen?”
“Ah.” Silas said with his index finger raised. “That’s true, but they never give the full details on what someone’s power can do. Sure they say something like they could discharge electricity from their bodies or something along those lines. But how much can they discharge? Can they do it from their whole body, or just their hands? Is it blue electricity or yellow? Or is it a unique color all together? Know what I’m saying?”
Bryce nodded in agreement. “Yeah, you’re right. That does make sense. Granted I haven’t seen anything on the news about power abuse yet, but they’d only give you the basic info on what it is. Not the full details on what it’s capable of.”
“Exactly. I know we have to follow the law and all, but our powers are a part of who we are. There’s no law against writing down what a person’s power is. At least as far as I know. The fact that I keep track of them and make notes on them feels kinda fun too.”
“Do your parents know about this by chance?”
“About the journal? Yeah, they do. I told them that I write down what my friends tell me over the web on my datascroll. It's also not illegal to talk about this sort of thing through those means because, how you supposed to stop natural gossip?”
Again Bryce nodded in agreement. “That's a good point as well.”
“However, if I told them the truth about how I learn about them, they'd kill me and dance on my grave.” He gestured a shiver. “But I never get into trouble when I do this little side hobby. I've been doing it for a couple years now actually, but I've never once gotten hurt or in any trouble.”
“I think that's called luck.” Bryce said chuckle.
“It is.” Silas responded with a chuckle of his own. “And I am aware that it'll run out at some point. So these little night adventures will come to an end at some point.” The two of them went quite then but kept their playful smiles. Bryce enjoyed this fun little venture with his new friend and fully accepted it as the thing he needed. Just then, a few people running down the other side of the street were shouting among themselves about a situation a few blocks away. The two Dreamkeepers paused and listened in and heard them say that a power user was causing a ruckus and wanted to see what was going to happen. Silas's grip on his journal tightened and his eyes lit up. “But they ain't ending tonight, that's for sure.”
Before Bryce could say anything, Silas was already running in the opposite direction to where the group was heading. Bryce could tell that he was now a man on a mission and there was no talking him out of it. Also, if he was being honest with himself, a little excitement like this was too enticing to pass up. Whether he felt this way in his old life or not didn't matter. Adventure called and he wasn't going to let it slip by.
Silas walked with his hands in his jacket pockets and smiled happily as his forked tail wagged around to signify his joyousness. “So? What do you think so far?”
