This is a striped hyena, which the aardwolf greatly resembles. The differences show mainly in their faces. Note the striped hyena's smaller eyes, larger muzzle, and the ridge of the skull that rises between the ears. Unlike canines, felines, and aardwolves, hyenas have a high ridge on the tops of their skulls that support powerful jaw muscles. This is what gives them their bone-crushing bite.
