Transformation is a fact of life, and having plans for it is only sensible, right?
I'll include some extra info about how this works, as well, for future reference without having to try and infer all of it from the story.
The spell has to be actively cast on someone by another fur that has magic, and must be recast every time it is used - so it can't just be continuously triggered without consequence.
You also have to really trust the one you let cast it on you, it was originally a prey control spell after all, and results in your appearing incapacitated next to them when it is triggered.
The one that cast the spell must still be at least animate and with access to their magic, or it will not trigger properly.
The spell works by creating a perfect copy of the victim's body at the time of being fully wiped or death, without the effects of any magic on it. The original body is still present.
The mind and magical core are not copied - the spell works by intercepting the magical core just before it is absorbed into the pred - actually some of the magic will have been, this can be recovered but contributes to the weakened state after being reformed.
The spell can be learnt, but takes several minutes uninterrupted to cast - another reason it was abandoned, and means it can't just be recast mid battle.
It doesn't always work - if the predator is strong enough, attuned with magic enough, or has done their own research on the spell, they can block it from stopping their absorbtion of the magical core.

John was going to be permanently transformed one of these days, hell, in the next few seconds probably, but he wasn’t too worried.
He’d come close several times already – hell, his current statue form was due to having been left transformed so long that his magic treated it as his ‘proper’ form – and knew it was only a matter of time really, especially if he continued fighting predators, before he caught a truly powerful one’s attention and got turned into an object permanently.
Thankfully, this had not exactly been a new discovery, and while he’d been left out of most magic classes after having his magic sealed by the presence of Another John, that did mean he had a lot of free time to – very carefully – explore some of the lesser used parts of the academy’s library for spells the predominantly predator staff didn’t bother teaching.
One of those was a very interesting one he had decided to simply call ‘contingency’, more because ‘prey retrieval spell’ was even worse than because he particularly liked the name.
Apparently it had been invented by a predator that wanted to have his prey and eat it too, and was supposed to be the all magical equivalent to the magical collars in Ranvec, allowing prey to be transformed and consumed repeatedly and reducing the cities dependence on ‘new blood’, however the inventor had never managed to get it to affect the prey in the way they wanted, making them more pliable and preventing them from removing it, and it had been abandoned and left forgotten in the corners of the Academy Library.
Of course, this was perfect for the wolf, as he didn’t want that to happen anyway – that core function was all that he wanted.
It did need to be cast by someone else though, as it worked by reforming the ‘prey’ at the moment of their minds or magical cores being erased, next to the fur that had cast it, due to its original purpose as a way to bring pet prey back to their owners.
Thankfully he’d been able to show it to Karry, and the Vixen had agreed to try it on him.
So, he raised another pillar of stone to absorb the next blow from the fox, then another that blocked a blast of magic headed towards Flanar, the fluffy fox managing to get the door to the outside open finally.
“Go! I’ll slow him down!” John called out to Flanar and Karry, the anthro fox looking at him in shock for a moment before Karry nudged him.
“Don’t worry, we’ve got a plan.” Karry whispered to him reassuringly, Flanar nodding slightly before running out of the toy store, closely followed by a green blur that soon overtook him.
With the other two out of the way John launched another rock blast towards the red fox anthro that owned the store, forcing him to block it with his magic.
The wolf fought like this for almost ten minutes, and bought as much time as he could before he finally got caught full on by a blast and disoriented, not having time to get back up before he felt himself shrinking and growing softer and more fluffy, soon just a cute little wolf plushie that the fox picked up, smaller than even his own plush form, and flopping in the larger anthro’s paw.
“There we go wuffy. You’ll be a great toy for some little kid.” The Fox said, stroking the plush a few times as he started to wipe away the plushie’s magic.
‘That does sound nice… I like being played with, right? Just a cute… little…toy…’ John thought as his mind started fading, until the plush was completely empty of either mind or magic…
And on the other side of Lunar City, next to a panting silver, purple and green vixen, a lifesized brown wolf plush popped into existence, flopping over for a moment before getting up with a grunt.
“Huh, that worked out pretty well.”
On the way back to the Academy for his next class, the wolf plush spotted another toy with a very similar design, sitting in a window waiting for some lucky boy or girl to buy it…
