Well the "gods" they worship (at least the chaos ones) are part of both fantasy and 40k so it's not surprising to see things you would imagine only being in fantasy to pop up in 40k.
Hell the space marines still use melee weapons all the time. From their iconic chainsword to the warpspear that the progenitor for the Soul Drinkers used until it was lost to warpspawn during the Heresy.
