The setting is the early European Middle Ages but stretched over a longer timespan as if scientific progress was incredibly slow, the lands are ruled by kings and Christian religious figures. Most people are serfs and live in frugal serfdom under the lords of the lands. Plagues regularly scourge the continent as a result of the war with the undead and the infinite dark forces of Baal, aka Satan. Thankfully, daylight will keep the darkness at bay and weaken or kill the undead, but at night they come out. When the forces of Baal goes to large scale war, thunderclouds cover the sky blocking all sunlight. At the forefront the feared Vampire Dragons flies. But in the current timeline of the story, the war against the darkness have almost been won by the combined forces of humanity and other non-humans resisting Baal. Butthe dark forces of Baal are slowly rebuilding and sightings of the dark creatures are rare, almost as if slipping into myth if it wasn't for the remains displayed in towns and cities reminding people of the forces of darkness that still wish to conquer to the land of the living.

The Vampire Dragon species was created thousands of years ago by crazed and demented necromancers and sorcerers under the bidding of their Vampire Lords for the wars against the living. By combining black magic and necromancy used in conjunction with vampire blood, the Vampire Dragons were born.

Used as flying shock assault troops they quickly became one of the deadliest and most feared horrors of the Vampire Lords armies. After thousands of years of breeding to get more of them, each new generation changed drastically. Because of their close ties with black magic their genetic is highly unstable and they end up look nothing like the first of their kind, loosing their scales and taking on a more batlike appearance as well as sprouting random mutations. These mutations can be anything from extra eyes to being covered in spikes or sprouting a new limb or two.

They feed on the blood of humans, elfs, dwarfs and other non-humans as well as other dragons, if they don't feed for prolonged times they will gradualy devolve into mentaly instable and instinct driven blood-lusting creatures.

In the current age the Vampire Dragons can be found as servants of vampire lords or in covens made up of their own living in castles or massive burrows underground, pretty much always with skeletal servantsraised from the dead and doing their every bidding.

Because of their hideous dark nature and horrifying appearance the vampire dragons have been hunted to near extinction by the humans and non-humans of the world. This resulted in them becoming an incredibly rare sight and when discovered it is deemed a worthy risk to put them down at every cost.
