" The male feline figure paced back and forth in the small hallway in front of the slave’s quarters. Mark the snow leopard held a look of worry on his face as he pondered what he would say to Amber about what happened. Try as he might, he couldn’t think of a good excuse he could give, and he didn’t want to lie to her. “Bartholomew would probably mention it with her nearby anyway. Dammit! Amber said that Masters are supposed to care for and protect their ‘pets’. Where was your protection?” he asked in thought before he came to the only real option he had. He was going to have to tell Amber the truth. He turned to the vixen’s door before a motion and sound startled him suddenly. Maneki took a huge gasp of air and bolted upright from her slumped position as the knife clattered to the floor before her. Mark recoiled from the sight for a second and stared unbelieving as the calico simply coughed and panted where she sat. He stood for a moment in shock as he stared at the female in disbelief. “Where am…Master Sly’s castle?” asked Maneki a little absently as she blearily looked around. A pain registered in her chest and she looked down to see the knife on the floor in front of her. She gasped again as the image of the snow leopard guard stabbing that very knife in her chest flashed in her mind and tried to push herself away from the bloody weapon. “You’re alive?” came a shaky voice from her side. She looked to behold the same guard from before. Instantly a hiss leapt from her throat. Her fangs were bared and her claws unsheathed threateningly as rage flashed in her eyes suddenly. “Whoa whoa calm down Maneki. I am not your enemy.” he said quickly seeing this. The almost feral rage in the calico female’s eyes was blinked away at his words as she heard her name and saw his demeanor. He held his hands up toward her in a calming manner instead of grabbing his sword like he easily could. Could he be telling the truth? “My name is Mark. I am a friend of Amber’s. I apologize. I didn’t realize that you were coming to deliver something to her on behalf of your Master.” he explained quickly. Maneki moved to stand before the pain from before in her chest registered again at her movement. She gasped in shock and clutched over her chest where she’d been stabbed as she fell back to a sitting position. To her surprise the wound was glowing blue. “Don’t try to move. Your body isn’t ready yet.” he said sympathetically. “You stabbed me.” she said still grasping things. “Yes; just as you did me. And I thought I’d killed you. When I figured out who you were though I prayed you had a healing enchantment on your clothes like I do, but I didn’t find any.” he reported. “Then how am I still…” “Your collar.” said the snow leopard cutting her off and pointing to her neck. “My collar?” asked Maneki confused. “There is the unmistakable glow of an active healing rune showing beneath your collar. It’s a strong one to have a glow bright enough to be seen from the underside of the collar. And it’s not the only one.” he said as he pointed at her tail cuff now. Sure enough Maneki could see the blue glow lightly coming from underneath the restraining article. Maneki stared at the glow in awe as she noted the flow of magical energy around her body. She could feel its movements, sweeping over and around her from her collar and tail cuff like a warm current of water soothing her and coming to a focus on her stab wound. “A small smile crossed her lips as three simple words flitted through her mind. “Thank you Master.” "
