The new-character-introduction-fest continues!
Welcome back to the festival where I have not just one character but two to introduce at the same time. I've been meaning to get these two drawn for such a long time, and their existence goes back further than that. Funny enough, I've said about the same thing with all the others I've recently drawn too.
One of my all-time favorite video games is the Sims 3, I've been playing it since 2010 or 2011, I'd say, when I asked my Grandma if I could get the Sims 3: Deluxe Starter pack while we were out shopping one day. It came with the base game and Ambitions expansion although I didn't know until much later how you could add that in. I had only played the original Sims prior - for the GameCube of all things - so coming into this new Sims and everything was both familiar and new threw me off, but I absolutely loved the expanded creativity options and the open world to explore with your household.
I would have phases with this game, where I would play a whole bunch, put it down for awhile and then come back to again, and then repeat. In that time too, I would get more expansions, including Pets and my personal favorite, Into The Future. Thanks to my friend, I was also able to use her copies of the expansion packs to get every expansion of the game on my computer, and we even got ourselves a physical copy each of Late Night, the limited print expansion that was thought to just be a digital version, but I found a combo of it with High-End Loft stuff on Amazon.
However, I'm getting off-topic, this isn't about my personal experiences with Sims 3, this is what I did with the game, and what I've done here goes almost as far back as when I first started playing. Most of my towns and playing sessions usually revolved around my Sim, a female Sim version of me, and two children that we had: a son who had the same name as me, and a daughter, both assumed to be twins. Thanks to all of these expansions and what they brought with, I was able to let these Sims, while at first not a lot, now had a huge range of things to interact with and I could form a personal attachment with.
At the same time, when it came to storytelling and roleplays, I admit to trying to make child characters a number of times, and each time I couldn't settle on a design and personality for them and give them a proper identity, or I could, but I really lost interest while using them and/or felt generally unsatisfied. All of these times were also in my creative slump, where I wasn't doing much of anything. So, during one of my phases back in Sims 3, and realizing that these two teenagers that I've constantly kept in almost all my households were growing bigger and bigger in their respective world, I thought to myself that this is the way I should go. These are the ones I should base a child character off of.
With that, Ioa is a fairly small world with multiple nations on it, one of which is often known about and the biggest, but it's also known for its diversity among species. Every creature imaginable, from the Animal Kingdom to the Mushroom World just a ride into space or Warp Pipe away, even from the world where humans dwell from. The Light Kingdom truly is a melting pot of species from all across the universe, and with it, a crazy-high amount of couples of all shapes and sizes of these different creatures. In this case, a male human, and a female Yoshi, who gave birth to Yoshi twins, one a boy, the other a girl. She was known as Rainbow, while he was known as... Kyle, after his father. But a fun nickname he was given was simply Junior, which he preferred more. Together, they were a wonderful family together, the twins played often, were great in school, the parents loved them, and they had a fantastic childhood.
But around the time they were transitioning from elementary school and into middle school, something was changing. They slowly stopped doing things together, the twins were more and more on their own, the lovely caring parents they once knew started to fade away. It was unknown to them exactly what it was, but negativity just continued to swirl in the household, with the parents eventually starting to get nasty with Junior and Rainbow, sometimes abusive, for next to nothing, and rarely, worse. They stopped going to friends' houses, or bringing friends home, they became more and more silent at school and their grades started to plummet. They were rarely allowed to leave the house or go somewhere alone.
This all came to a head one night when Rainbow woke her brother up in the middle of the night, telling him to grab some of their things, and that they should just run, fed up with the constant abuse and losing faith over her parents as they were no longer the ones they once knew. Fortunately for them, their parents never thought they would turn on them, so there was nothing stopping the twins from opening the window from their room, leaping out of it, and running... It was only them now, they could make their own rules, no adults to take advantage of them, they didn't need to trust anyone, they could do things themselves.
Except... no they couldn't. At least, not on their own. Neither of them had any extra supplies, clothes - at least in Rainbow's case - and they also don't have many skills, such as cooking or survival. On their own, they could only wander the towns and city, hiding in alleys and sleeping on the streets, as well as staying out of sight so that they wouldn't be taken by anyone. Rainbow took the lead for most of their escape, and no, she trusted no one, and fed it to Junior that he shouldn't either. No adult at all, not even the police; they might just take them back home.
After a couple of days, what very little money they had was quickly dwindling, they couldn't pay for food, so late in the night, Junior and Rainbow broke into a roadside store in order to find something to eat. They were successful, also packing some candy away to take with them, but as Junior was picking things off the shelf, one of them was actually a Softening kit that he mistook for candy and ate it on the spot. It messed with him at first, causing them to lose time in the night while Junior got better, but now he had become a Softie; Rainbow made sure to recognize the packaging so that they could identify packages like this and avoid them. She even saw many strange packages back home and remembered that they were potentially dangerous.
It had now been a few days since Junior and Rainbow had run from home and it was quickly taking a toll on them. They hadn't showered since leaving, they didn't have much food, and it was becoming increasingly strenuous to sleep on the street when they were only relying on themselves to find safety, although they didn't know where that was. Early one morning, Rainbow found a flyer advertising the Royal Family's annual Easter celebration right at the Silver Tower. She proposed that the two of them could sneak onto the property and make an easy grab of the candy. Not only could they pick what they wanted, but that would help fill up their stash for later, so Junior agreed.
Arriving at the Tower proved to a tad challenging, as the Easter festival was a family event; if you were a child, you couldn't get in without a parent or guardian. Despite this, the twins snuck around to another part of the property and climbed through the hedges to get inside, where they could begin raiding the place for candy. Initially, they were very successful, the place was loaded with candy, but because it was morning and the two hadn't eaten yet, they decided to make Easter candy their breakfast, but within a few minutes, that was turned entirely on its head when Rainbow started feeling unwell. That turned into nauseousness, dizziness, crazy-painful stomachaches, and she could barely move. Their days long endeavor finally caught up with one of them, and without her to make the decisions, Junior was forced to call for help. He was willing to get in trouble with the Royal Family if it meant getting his sister back to health. Thanks to Kye, Sacred (http://sdragon01.deviantart.com/) and their friends, they took Rainbow into the Tower along with Junior, where she was immediately taken to their clinic to be treated.
As Rainbow was taken care of and rested up, Junior remembered what she had told him if they were confronted: don't talk to them at all, they can't be trusted. So Junior did just that, as the adults of the Tower came in periodically to check on their condition. Junior fared much better than his sister, and despite not talking at all to them, he still accepted food that they provided. After a few days of staying in the Tower, Rainbow was finally in stable condition and was sitting up and getting better, but she still held firm and refused to speak, demanding that they be able to leave. Kye and Sacred both denied their request, as they did arrive during an event that required a parent or guardian. Without them saying anything, they had to weigh the possibility of trying to find their family, but until then, they were prohibited from leaving the Tower. Their presence would capture the attention of Kyle, Simon, and soon Cinnamon, as they wondered if it was possible to get through to them too. They started visiting more often as well, and with their kind nature, Junior started to put Rainbow's leadership into question, who denied Junior and continued to state that they can only trust themselves.
One day at the Tower, Junior decided to break from the silence as he was allowed to move through the Tower. He found himself increasingly intrigued by Kyle, who for some reason looked almost like him. Same species, same colors, even their eyes were almost the same color. Junior felt comfortable around him most, but he was still respecting his sister's demands as well as not being sure what he could and couldn't say, but he explained what they were doing and what had happened, just enough to get the point across. This was enough for Kyle to report to the Kings of their situation, and they agreed to not contact the family, and keep them in the Tower, much to Rainbow's displeasure.
Rainbow had finally started to feel better, but she was still refusing to say much to the adults, continuously demanding that they leave. By this point, Cinnamon and Simon had started seeing them more often, as Cinnamon begun trying to reason with the girl; most of the Tower's inhabitants were male, so being one of the few females, she wanted to try and relate to her on that level, at least. Initially Rainbow was defensive and silent, but even she began to warm up to Cinnamon's calm, motherly nature. It reminded her of what her mother used to be like, and with enough effort, Rainbow finally confessed what was going on to her, much to Cinnamon's shock.
Together, she, Kyle and Simon agreed that together, they would form a parental bond and be the guardians for the twins that they had lost. It was an odd thing to hear from these adults they had just known for about a week or two, yet they were the first caring people that they had met since running away, the first group of people they could trust a tiny bit. This also allowed the twins to take on the last names of their new guardians.
Junior found himself trusting Kyle and Simon more while Rainbow stuck close to Cinnamon. Simon's son, Volt, would also be someone they would meet early on and found that he could be trusted more than the adults, so sometimes he knew something first before the others, raising the adults' efforts to gain their trust. However, their efforts were working, as they were becoming less quiet and resentful, especially in Rainbow's case, who had be stone-hard on the whole thing more than Junior. This payoff allowed them to finally address these adults like the guardians they were trying to be, even coming up with clever nicknames for them like "Doughy Dad," "Furry Dad," and "Doughy Mom."
Perhaps one of the biggest moments for the twins to realize their position with Kyle, Simon, and Cinnamon came to be during the Summer Festival that year, while they all went out together to enjoy the festivities... and ran into their actual parents at the fairgrounds. Both parties were surprised to run into each other, the twins' parents were thankful to have found them again, at least in the tone of their voices to our heroes, and implored that they come home, to which both siblings explicitly refused to do so, with Rainbow calling them out on everything wrong they did. This startled the parents at first, but when Rainbow wasn't stepping down, it became fierce, as the parents shoved aside Kyle, Simon, and Cinnamon to ruthlessly snatch the kids and try to force them to come back. Needless to say, this angered the heroes with their forceful behavior, but mostly Cinnamon, as she was not going to let these irresponsible adults take away two wonderful children who had gone through so much to find freedom. In her own anger and determination, she had awakened her psychic powers, able to immediately hold the parents in place with that power, and bring the kids to their safety, where the parents are ultimately arrested for child abuse.
In the end, the kids are both thankful for Cinnamon's bravery and intrusion and is finally the stepping stone needed for Rainbow to start breaking her silence and break down the emotional wall that kept her acting so coldly towards adults. Often after this point she would cry and weep, so much stress and emotions she had kept bottled up for weeks that formed after years of abuse, she was a girl trying to get back the people she loved most, but they never did. But over time, she would find it new again, in new adults that she and her brother could trust, and she also could enjoy Junior being happy again. They could start life over, with new people who wanted to see them be their best, just like their parents originally did.
Junior and Rainbow are based primarily off of their Sims 3 incarnations, in terms of personality, traits, and life goals. Junior was always put first in these games, however after using them outside of a game, Rainbow has taken that top billing, it seems. Regardless, both children are in their early teens and, again, are twins (although it would seem I drew one taller than the other when they're supposed to be about the same height).
Junior is not the brightest kid ever but he is the more excitable of the two. He absolutely loves the outdoors and playing all kinds of sports (falling in line with the Athletic trait). He has a ton of energy and is able to learn all sorts of sports very easily, which also translates into physical activity; his endurance and stamina is very high. This also leads into how little he wears, only keeping around a neckerchief that he got from his father, but he wears a newer sky blue one over that. One serves of a reminder of what used to be, the other of the future. He also loves video games and can play a lot with Kyle, Simon, and Volt.
Rainbow is more rebellious and more of a leader, she can be very strict and emotionless although being around someone she trusts most can bring out her true feelings. Rainbow also really loves music (aligning with the Virtuoso trait) and can easily play any musical instrument given to her. This was part of the reason she was able to open up more to Cinnamon, as she too is very capable of playing instruments most associated with classical music. For Rainbow, she enjoys mainly pop, rock, or metal music, with her favorite instruments being the guitar and piano.
Both Yoshis used their love of sports and music respectively to help them through tough times while on the run, as before their parents went violent, that was something they often enjoyed together. Junior would be out playing with his father, while Rainbow would either play an instrument with her mother, or even sing for her. Outside of their abuse, both are actually very intelligent and have taken martial arts classes, and have a few ranks too.
Early on, the new parents would enlist the help of a Support Pokémon to be with Rainbow and offer her help as she recovered from her former abuse, a Pikachu named Primrose, who also had a knack for music and liked to sing the most. This allowed both of them to connect on a very personal level and even share feelings for one another, as well as Rainbow and then Junior finding interest in becoming Pokémon Trainers. During their first year back at school, Junior would find a new friendship in one of Kyle's Pokémon's family members, a Riolu named Aiden, who shared the same love of sports and games that Junior did. Rainbow would also have a slight falling out with Primrose as she was spending more time with another Pikachu in the Tower named Helix, leading Rainbow to hate him. Although, once he learned of Rainbow's feelings, he made the effort to come to her and apologize for hurting her, it was never his intention. Surprisingly, she thanked him for coming forward about it and later asked if she could make Helix part of her team, almost certainly making herself a Trainer. Around this time, Aiden and his parents had moved into the Tower to live with their other son, Berry, a Lucario, who was already under the ownership of Kyle.
Rainbow would make her first catch during Kyle's endeavor to Alola, as she wasn't expecting to already have two Electric-types, she decided to follow through by catching a Togedemaru, named Momi, meaning "pearl" in Hawaiian. After that, she made it a goal to catch more Electric-types, or at the very least, the Pikachu-esque Pokémon.
Junior named Aiden his first Pokémon when he agreed to join in, as well as Berry who agreed to stay with Junior. This allowed Junior to assume himself as a Fighting-type Trainer as he started honing his martial arts yet again.
Normally these two are always seen together, and I usually treat both of these characters as one entity. They look after each other, care about each other, and finally stand out from one another, something I struggled to do for a long time. Originally, Rainbow wasn't supposed to look like this, her jacket was supposed to be one whole unit of clothing instead of being open like it is, so I actually drew her again and this was the ending result, something I'm far more satisfied with. Even then, I still colored her first and then did Junior afterwards. He was supposed to hold the basketball in his arm but I decided that it wouldn't look correct from how I drew it, so I left it off to the side for visual.
Both twins' favorite color is blue, but Junior likes a lighter shade while Rainbow likes it a little darker. You really can only see it thanks to Junior's neckerchief, but on Rainbow, she shows it off on her shoes, and most of her jacket is that color; it's only once you go down the fabric or go to her hood that it changes colors. The color scheme was pretty fun to make for Rainbow's jacket, as it involved splitting the jacket up with lines and then using gradients to color it in properly, which I think came out really nicely!
And just having these two around is proof that I finally got it right, this is probably the longest description I've written yet, but I wanted to share my story, their story, and the process it took to get here. A huge thanks to SDragon01, LilArrin (http://lilarrin.deviantart.com/), and ShadedBlue89 (https://www.furaffinity.net/user/shadedblue89/) for all of your suggestions and advice for making these guys and helping bring them to life! Thanks for reading and looking!
