Just in time for my birthday (when it was originally uploaded)!
Welcome back, everyone! It was honestly an inevitability that I would do this, following all of the other pieces I've done this year, although it surprised me that I didn't do a new reference for my Yoshi self sooner. Nevertheless, this was also a slow-going project like Rae's second go (https://www.deviantart.com/ikyle/art/Rae-Doyle-Raichu-Version-2-5-832473553) was, as I wanted to get everything right and figure things out, because this... Figuring out what I wanted for myself was a challenge, and anyone who's known me for a good amount of time knows that I change my mind on something every time I sneeze.
Honestly, this was going to be a huge project of mine, I wanted to give myself a lot more this time around than I ever have, but I really didn't see that through, unfortunately. I will get into it, but as you can see, only two outfits came out of this when I actually did three, and I wanted to do like six total. I guess I ended up taking too much time and just wanted to get this done and up before the big day.
<s>It's not really a big day this year, we all know what's happening in the world.</s>
Anyway, what I wanted to go for this time around was consolidation and changing up how I want to design my Yoshi, which up until now has been making him as close to myself as possible. The very base of it was always skin tone, hair and eyes. The rest was up to my choice. Even from the beginning, I tried to keep it close to what I'd see myself in as a Yoshi, but even looking back(https://www.deviantart.com/ikyle/art/OP-Kyle-the-Yoshi-201821791), it was a bit of a mix and I didn't really have a proper idea of what I wanted, even later when I was starting to get some cohesion (https://www.deviantart.com/ikyle/art/Kyle-342264137).
Eventually, I was getting it down, I felt, with proportions and a proper idea of what I wanted, but I'm always a bag of ideas so I just end up throwing something and seeing if it sticks, which in the lead-up to my last update in 2018 (https://www.deviantart.com/ikyle/art/Kyle-the-Yoshi-2018-Update-746814964), I felt like I... almost got it completely. I was happier with it but it was still a jumble of ideas that came on.
Ultimately, I was now thinking on and off of the idea of sticking with being as true to real life as possible. Looking through my art supplies, I noticed a tracing sketchpad that actually didn't belong to me but my friend (who is unfortunately not active on DeviantART anymore) and thought that this would be what I could use to make this update work. So instead of limiting myself to what I would probably wear regularly, I decided to split it up: continue what I was doing, making a look that was close to normalcy, but another one that would allow me to be way more creative. This was the result.
My plan is to also eventually separate each of these images and point out what everything is and make a better reference for these new elements, especially the LightTEC equipment.
1 | Updated Scales Colors
From two years ago, there used to be a rainbow feather hanging from the middle scale. This originated from an RP with ShadedBlue89 (https://www.furaffinity.net/user/shadedblue89/) which was a sort of storage item for different forms that Kyle could take on and at will change into any of them. Rather, I decided to remove the feather completely and transfer the colors and ability into Kyle's body, which is why his scales have gone from orange to rainbow. This was something I had continuously thought about adding to my Yoshi's design, as I've admitted numerous times, I love rainbows and the combination of beautiful colors together, but it's not something I would regularly wear, or be seen in head to toe; I would rather it be subtle, so putting it on the body in this way I feel is exactly what I want.
2 | Updated Body Colors
This one is even more subtle than the scales getting changed, which is that the skin color has been very slightly lightened, and the hair has been very slightly darkened, in order to give the hair and eyes a different shade of brown, despite them being next to identical still.
3 | LightTEC
Now this is something I think I'd like to cover more in a separate reference picture, but this is the name of the equipment that my Yoshi can now regularly wear. Developed by Mac (https://www.deviantart.com/ikyle/art/Macintosh-Appleseed-840822742), these tools are all custom-made to suit Kyle. Something that I've always loved is futuristic/sci-fi/hi-tech themes, often inspired by games and movies that displayed them, such as Sims 3: Into The Future or SimCity: Cities of Tomorrow. I even attempted to bring some of these things in previously. Some made it, some did not.
One of which is the LightSIGHT HUD visor, that was featured in 2018 and was inspired originally by a sketch page that LilArrin (https://www.deviantart.com/lilarrin) did for me all the way back in 2014, and then was continued by ShadedBlue89 in some art he had done for me, which can be seen in 2018 (https://www.deviantart.com/ryex-617/art/CyberBuddies-Christmas-2018-777967596) and 2019 (https://www.deviantart.com/ryex-617/art/Kyle-Birthday-Gift-792838121). I loved the look from all of these examples and knew that I had to keep it and build more from that. Although I still have a long way to go in terms of proper detailing. The LightSIGHT is a curved piece of glass - in this case, prescription glass as Kyle has impaired sight - that connects to two points on the side of Kyle's head, acting as speaker points for incoming communications. The LightSIGHT is capable of general heads-up display functions, such as displaying the date, time and weather conditions in a spot out of the corner of your eye so that it doesn't impede your vision, but you can quickly glance at information. Sensors can be built into the device in order to improve functionality.
That certainly goes for the armbrace computer module on Kyle's arm, the LightSCREEN Holo-Computer, featuring a custom-built operating system, retaining the previous functions of Kyle's smartwatch, and housing the rest of his equipment as a Pokémon Trainer, such as a Mega Stone, Z-Crystal, and Wishing Star in separated chambers to prevent them from interacting with one another in close proximity. This device is also capable of launching a holographic screen capable of touch in order to display data that is also linked to the LightSIGHT visor.
The LightLOOP collar is a simplified and updated version of the collar that Kyle has worn for some time now. It lacks a tag, but its functions of having a speaker on it to allow the user to communicate when stuck in a form that would prohibit verbal communication and having an emergency drop of Reform Potion at the ready for when the user is completely immobile are now built into the collar itself. It's made with a special mesh that allows it to be more flexible and breathable rather than previous materials or metal. It's said that it can even squish with the user if they're a Softie...
Inspired by toe shoes, or shoes that are designed to the shape of a foot, the LightSPEED fitted shoes also feature that breathable material that the collar has, which allows them to be super lightweight and fit comfortably around the footpaw, also include pawpad-like Dots on the bottom of each shoe that allow them to have grip on surfaces. So not only are they easy to move in, but they're great to move on many surfaces.

4 | Original Outfit Updates
However, it's nice to have choices, which is what I wanted for this update, having at least a second outfit. So, I did just that! Returning are Kyle's classic glasses, smartwatch and Yoshi boots, now in a neutral light gray/silver color, but now actually coming into the mix properly is a backpack. This set-up is meant to represent the realistic side of Kyle, and why both outfits have similar items on each: I regularly wear glasses, and my smartwatch, but in this case, I also tend to carry around a backpack and like to have things readily on hand.
Obscured though, is the end of the Friend Bow, a gift by Mrs. Raichu (LilArrin), which is a helpful item of Pokémon Exploration Teams, as it has a strange power that increases the chances of recruiting other Pokémon to your team. While there is no official HD artwork of this item, I tried to mimic what I'd think it'd look like using its colors.
In all, I'm quite content with this update and I look forward to doing some alterations to the colors in celebration of the yearly holidays, and each of these will see separate uploads once I draw up each piece of the outfit to detail them better. A big thanks to SDragon01 (https://www.deviantart.com/sdragon01), LilArrin, and Ryex-617/ShadedBlue89 for the inspiration, drive and advice in the making of this reference; I hope it stays for a long time! Thanks for reading and viewing!
