Realistic study of the Striped Hyena.
Like all hyenas, the Striped Hyena is not a canine like a dog or wolf, but a member of the Hyaenidae.
Striped Hyenas are primarily scavengers, but will also eat fruit and insects, and they can also hunt small prey such as lizards and rabbits.
Unlike some other species of hyena, the Striped Hyena is primarily solitary and nomadic. However that does not mean they are not social animals; they often live in small family groups, though they usually forage alone.
Striped Hyenas do not "laugh" like their Spotted cousins, nor do they have much gender dimorphism. The Striped Hyena is also primarily nocturnal.

"I am not sureif the evolutional categorizing is correct."
IT IS, trust me. Compare the skulls of a hyena species (which I've conveniently sketched on each hyena study) with a canine or feline. Hyaenidae VASTLY differ from Canidae, who VASTLY differ from Felidae. Just because they LOOK alike doesn't mean they're anything at ALL alike. Their structure and habits and genetics are all very different. :P
Something to consider: the Thylacine looked so much like a canine that it was incorrectly called the Australian Wolf. However, it wasn't a canine at ALL, it was a marsupial! And go way back to the Creodonts! There were giant wolflike and catlike and otterlike and even BEARLIKE predators...and they were HOOVED animals, ungulates more closely related to SHEEP than wolves!
Superficial appearance is exactly that: SUPERFICIAL. :P
And thankyee. :)

I understand what you mean and I mostly agree, though I perceive more relationship flow when takin the species out of their drawers. Of course do I play with intuition, I have this morphing gear in my image memory. Marsupials are a good pool for this kind of imagination game. But the scientist is you.
My favourite kind of hyena, or animal overall. :D About time people post good concrete info and studies on the hyenas.
I am also sick of how people expect ALL hyenas to be like the Spotted hyena with the laughter, reversed genderbuilt and the females to have a psuedo-male gender. It's like expecting foxes to howl just because the wolf do. ;]
Eitherway. Faved most :D yay!
