It isn't as much "magic has a cost" but that, "excessive emotion/trauma can harm you" -- but that is only the case for witches like Battam's mother who has repressed their emotions.
So, for example, Battam, who has not repressed his emotions for years and years and years, has no chance of his magic "back-firing", but Violana (his mother pictured here) had a very high chance of her magic back-firing, or building up pressure inside her and exploding like a bomb. Some witches have lost limbs, eyes, and organs to magic building up in them and back firing.
But, of course, the covens don't see it like Battam does. If Violana /had only/ been /stronger/ more /in control/ of her emotions, this would never have happened, right? (But, I am going to reveal TOO much if I keep talking on this topic.)
It's uh, quite a complex ideal system that I *barely* dive into for this comic because I am not one to do info dumps and am trying hard to dish out all the info over a long series of comics/games (I also don't feel like I am good at explaining it so that's always a work in progress) so to get the full scope I really do recommend just checking out the story beyond this because in case you didn't know-- this series has MORE comics AND games too, which all give bits and pieces to this world! Here's a link to more parts of the story: https://itch.io/c/665291/solanaceae-series
Thanks for reading!
