With anything welded time for the hard stuff... the weld beads you see standing up is hardfacing it's much harder and abrasion-resistant than manganese Steel or AR 500 plate. Because it's in a rod or wire form you can put it right where you need it.

The hardfacing used is .045 hardfacing wire. I forget the number you can get it in stick too.
There are different grades of hardfacing you get the one to fit your needs.

It breaks up the smooth face of the steel and keeps the stones tumbling instead of gouging.

Yeah, I've work on a couple of construction sites.

That's about right it lifts the material off the face so it changes the surface pressure and tension. It's also much harder so it wears less.
