*fist bumps back* My mother is the green-thumb, not me. I choose flowers that catch my fancy and she plants them where they go as she has color themes planned through out the yard. We try to stick to perennial flowers since it snows here. So this years acquisition for me through all the public madness is a white Bleeding Heart bush, a Red Hot Chili Iris, and a Swans-In-Flight Iris. She has a Pink & White she wants to do in the yard closer to the driveway near the road, so the Swans-In-Flight hasn't been planted yet. We also have a Clematis vine that's slowly progressing as it seems to get disturbed every year from constant garden format placement. But since it's been replanted in a spot where it'll stay with the new Hard Kiwi vines it should do its' own thing now. One thing I've been wanting to try growing was Passion Flower vines, but they'd have to be an indoor/outdoor plant. But with being tired from work during the week and getting things fixed on the weekend I've been lazy and not wanting to do much. :)
Ahhh, fun stuff! My house growing up was like that. My mom was the avid gardener, though, i definitely got sucked into it, myself. we had a regular old bleeding heart on the east side, it was ancient. came up same as every every year for literally decades. oddly we didn't have too many iris growing, but we had two different Clematis. those are such beauties. And we had a passionflower once in a while. I miss our gardens. like the water garden I made, and frogs flocked to...., the rock garden, shade garden tree garden...and most of all...our massive VEGGIE garden.
My mother's main veggie garden is fenced off, large, and has a wood chip "floor". The chicken coop has a big L-shaped chicken run inside of it and it is also where my Sour Cherry tree is located. The chicken run also contains one goose and some duckies. The largest and tallest panel wall of the chicken run is where my mother moved the Clematis vine and planted the Hardy Kiwi vines for this year. Hardy Kiwi's supposedly get massive when they take off so it's the largest wall they have to climb up. If you've never planted an Iris give one a try, they come in loads of pretty colors & patterns and they'll end up with more flowers the following year. The main flower gardens are outside of the veggie garden nearest the house where the chickens aren't allowed to go. They destroy everything if they get into the flower beds. Our Lilies also haven't been doing well as we now have Lily Leaf beetles that came along last year and just destroyed all of them. We've never had them as a problem before so we have no clue how to rid of them. They're absolutely disgusting, the grubs munch on everything and cover themselves in waste.
Oooh, I've planted some iris in other gardens, I'm sure we had some at my house growing up, just none....in the newer gardens we made together. I think i had a blue flag native iris in my water garden...but the german bearded ones. I guess were too bland for my mom. ewww that does sound gross. visit a garden center, they'll have answers and products. I've wanted to try growing hardy kiwi too. sounds like you've got a good thing going, though. keep enjoying.
The Hardy Kiwi is new for us this year. Sadly because of all the happenings going on our smaller garden centers that are actually helpful have either remained closed or are only allowing curbside delivery. Any plant that isn't commonly seen, can survive our temp zone and bears edibles we'll gladly give a try. Once we've had success with it then we'll just grow more of them. Besides my sour cherry we have two different types of mulberry, the fruit look like little caterpillars growing from the tree/bush. :)
