A Review of Bad dog! by Robert Baird
Atwood is a dog. A boarder collie to be precise. And she is one of the numerous animals of various sorts that were tinkered genetically to turn them into more useful servants for humanity. Her job specifically revolves primarily around sorting though the news feeds for a man named Akamiro. Akamiro treats her as a cross between a pet and a servant. And very much dislikes becoming aware of any indication that she might be more than that. This dislike contributes, along with her interactions with a cat named Ralston, to Atwood seeking out concepts and ideas foreign to the natural psyche of dogs.
This story is wonderful. The reader very much gets into the head of Atwood and how dogs like her think and operate. Baird lays out a complicated world where humans have used genetic tinkering to bypass some important ethical questions that really should be answered. Atwood’s engineering did not involve any human DNA because of this, and so her way of thinking is very much that of a dog. She is incredibly brilliant but the lens through which she views the world is one rather alien to a human being. And Baird paints the picture of Atwood’s world masterfully and in a way that lets the reader slide right into her world without a fuss.
What more, amongst all the active world building and educating about the point of view of Atwood, Baird uses these elements as a starting point to show how Atwood begins to evolve past her initial state of affairs. Seeking things and concepts that are beyond the grasp of how she thinks and sees the world. And her difficulty in conceptualizing them given the way of which dogs like her naturally think. The method of one’s thinking can make integrating some concepts difficult, but in this case, Atwood is eager to try anyway. And is perhaps more than successful as she moves from being simply a ‘Good girl’ to being a ‘bad dog’. At least as far as Akamiro is concerned.
I would highly recommend giving this story a look. Or a listen.
