I was revisiting my older customs (as an adult, since my childhood customs are long gone), and wondered how I might create my oldest one as an artist today. So, meet Mr. Douglas, the 2020 version of my 2011 custom Ms. Douglas, created on the Breyer Stablemate Citation mold! He was something of a mess when I got him; his right hind leg was missing below the hock, as was his left ear, and he basically had no nostrils. So I sculpted him a new ear and nostrils, and replaced his leg with a random Stablemate leg I had gotten in a lot of Breyers a while back. I also removed his logo and seams, carves his ears, and resculpted his gelding parts.
While the original Ms. Douglas was painted entirely in acrylics, Mr. Douglas has a buckskin coat of earth pigments while his mane and tail are acrylic and earth pigments. The Douglas fir branches that grace his sides are also painted in acrylics, and he's been sealed with several coats of acrylic sealer, while his eyes, nostrils, mouth and hooves are glossed. He turned out beautifully, with a nice smooth finish. He measures 2 3/4" tall.
