the Hillanders are sort of a communist hive-like society. they're kinda ant-like after all. they don't have money, you get paid in items and food. especially valuable items & resources have to be approved for distribution by a council, since resources are limited.
every Hillander also has to graduate university and then choose an occupation in a specified field, you know to become a productive member of society. Kiwa chose zoology, for Fitzroy it was volcanology. if you fail to graduate, you get assigned a lesser job... like mushroom picker, or toad poop scooper.
