True, maybe one day he'll invent the hyperdrive that enables his people to become major players in the interstellar community!
...Assuming it's not actually just some old cookbook or something. Maybe he's getting ideas for to do with the local antelope and zebra, ways to put a new spin on having company for dinner! He did find an onion recently, maybe he's going to put it to good use.

Jack has always struck me as a character that would grow up to be a farmer or something, maybe this is how he gets his start, an old book on plants and vegetables and how to care for them. Something you wouldn't necessarily expect a race of saber-toothed alien hyena creatures to really have, yet their villages are often full of little gardens and farms since their ungulate neighbors are sapient creatures too--and don't take too kindly to being hunted for food!
