Convention Tension
Vacation time did not come naturally to Ava, as someone who always had to be busy doing something, the hippo found relaxing for a few days more stressful than relaxing. What if in that time she missed out on the story of the century? At least that’s what the old Ava thought. It’s funny how time can change someone, especially under the influence of romance. She had found herself dating Rob for quite a while now, and while it may not have been one of her more normal relationships, that made it all the more rewarding.
For Ava, the thrill of finding a good lead was always calling, often leading the hippo to new and exciting ventures. Speaking of Ventures, her partner was currently on board a ship by the same name. Travelling through the stars, seeing unknown worlds, the only thing stopping Ava from enlisting herself was the fact that she could barely operate her smart thermostat as it was. Were it not for Rob she would still be having 30-degree nights...something told her she wasn’t prepared for advanced scientific equipment.
Rob was a member of the S.T.R, who had more secrets then there were starts in the sky. As tempting as it was to beg the canine for a hint of a lead, Ava respected him too much to do so. He always treated her with kindness and respect, even at his most chaotic she could tell he had not one malicious bone in his body. To take advantage of that would be a low blow, even for a journalist.
As one can imagine with these two different career choices, the two didn’t see much of each other in person: Ava was a journalist, and as such found herself hopping from place to place, never staying in one spot for too long. As for Rob, he was almost always in the Venture, even in his off days there wasn’t much he could do in terms of going anywhere. As he once told the hippo, “You can only do so much floating about the deck with the gravity drives before even that gets boring!”
While the two couldn’t meet face to face, through the magical wonders of technology Ava and Rob managed to talk to each other every day. It was mostly through messages, the two responding whenever they could, talking about whatever was on their minds, from how their days were, to more trivial topics such as betting on how close Rob could get a bottle of ketchup to his captain before she moved away in fear of getting a stain on her uniform.
Pictures were frequently exchanged, Rob would send daily pictures of the view from the deck; seeing swirling nebulas and flaring suns never bored Ava, it was amazing to see how vast the universe was, and Rob got to see it every day. Among other pictures Rob sends his attempts to paint flames on Sebastion, his friend Jeffery’s robot. The last picture he sent was of him running away with a grin on his face as Jeffrey chased after him.
She was dating a doofus, and she couldn’t be happier for it.
Ava sent her own pictures in response to Rob’s. While she couldn’t hope to match his views, she sent him pictures from where she found herself reporting in. Beaches, cabins, the countryside, she liked to think he enjoyed them. But not as much as her other pictures. It was a game the hippo liked to tease with, while maybe unfair, she couldn’t help but play. She had noticed that the fist frisky picture she sent him it took a while to respond, now whenever she sent a rather risqué image, she did so with a smile, knowing it’s recipient would be too flustered to respond immediately.
The record so far was two minutes.
Even with that, nothing beat the two being physically present together. It was a rare treat, so the couple made the most of it. Unbeknownst to Rob, Ava was making plans for their next meeting, and it all started with a question.
Who would win, Batman or Superman?
It was an innocent enough question, one that Ava would have gladly answered, had she had any idea who Batman or Superman was. She could hear Rob’s jaw drop, and the rest of the night was dedicated to teaching the hippo everything he knew about comics. She tried her best to understand all the terms he was throwing at her: something something Kryptonian, being friends with...Bruceman? Then there was something about solar rays, the red ones were good and the yellow ones were bad...at least she thought so.
Needless to say, Rob’s tutoring wasn’t getting through to Ava, but the alternative was much better: At least once a week the two would find time to watch at least one superhero movie together online, Rob trying his best to not interrupt the movie with his so called “fun facts.” All in all not a bad way to have some nice dates.
All this led to one penultimate point, which began to sow the seeds in Ava’s master plan. During one of their calls Rob spoke of a comic convention, apparently one of the biggest that was coming soon. He tried to get in, for several years in fact, but all the tickets were sold out before Rob could even get his hopes up.
A week later Ava sent him a picture of her holding a four day pass, with Rob’s name written. His reaction was so intense the hippo had to hold her holo-pad a few feet away from herself, his volume nearly breaking her device's speakers. She almost couldn’t tell him there was a catch: She was only able to get one pass, and that was for Rob. Even if she somehow got two, she was going to be on assignment the weekend of the convention, it seemed circumstances would keep them apart for a while longer. Ava could tell that Rob was saddened by this, she knew he wanted to take her, to show her all the cool spots and take the time to enjoy each other. She told him to just enjoy himself, she would be there in spirit.
Of course Ava was lying completely about this, but he didn’t have to know that just yet...
Almost immediately after her call with Rob ended the hippo started another one, waiting for a few moments before the face of a pig filled her Holo-pad:
“Hey Coral, it’s me Ava! Oh yeah that still fits just fine! Look, you’re my go to gal for my custom clothes, I was wondering if you would be up for something more...unique.”
Fast forward a few weeks later and Ava found herself waiting by a hallway, doing something she thought she would never do, hiding from Rob. Granted, it was a bit hard due to her size, and even more so with her current outfit on.
Surprise one, Coral had gone above and beyond in this outfit. Most cosplays had faux armor that for the most part looked passable. Looking at herself, Ava thought for a second that she came from Themyscira. Her outfit looked like it came straight from a comic book. Her armbands shimmered, the cape made her feel like a badass, and she had to admit, the boots were pretty cute. But best of all she could actually move around in this thing!
Ava smiled to herself, again taking hold of her Lasso of Truth, the rope beginning to shimmer with light as she handled it, yet another reason why the hippo was giving Coral a big tip. She remembered Rob mentioning the lasso, apparently it made whoever was entangled in it speak only the truth. While this replica may not have the same effects, Ava was sure she could find some other uses for it...Her train of thought was broken when an elevator dinged right next to her.
Surprise two, As the doors opened, out came another hippo, dressed in a skintight outfit that left little to the imagination. The Black Cat, otherwise known as Tammy, stepped out, a sly grin on her face as she looked over the hotel floor.
“This is pretty high up,” Tammy broke the silence, greeting Ava with a wave as the two hippos looked at each other’s cosplays, “What is this, penthouse?”
“Presidential suite actually, if my Robbie is going to travel, I make sure he gets only the best.”
“Any chance we can make this a three-person relationship?”
“Nice try Tammy.”
In truth Ava was able to snag three passes, one for Rob, one for herself, and one for her surprise guest. The hippo knew that a while ago Rob had a chance encounter with Tammy, and while it didn’t go anywhere, the two remained friends. Tammy proved to be quite helpful, guiding Ava on how to make an authentic Wonder Woman cosplay, making sure the colors were accurate, even teaching her how to properly handle the Lasso of Truth.
If Ava didn’t know any better, she would think Tammy was a bigger comic book geek than Rob!
The plan was in motion, Ava had been messaging Rob, so she knew that he was still in his room, There was just one thing left to do. The two hippos giving a nod at each other, they sneakily mad their way to the door, before knocking, they went into formation: Tammy quickly turned around, her rear facing the door as Ava bent over to lean on her; one hand on Tammy’s middle while her other hand knocked on the door, then after resting on Tammy’s booty, the hippo trying not to think too much on how her hand simply sunk in... this was a treat for Rob, not herself...
As soon as Ava knocked on the door, movement could be heard inside, Rob was quickly making his way, the hippo smiled, finally able to hear his voice in person after so long, but only for a second, she had to get back into character.
“Man, I just ordered some pizza five seconds ago, talk about fast deliverrrrrr...”
As Rob opened the door, he was greeted by the sight of two hippos taking up the entire doorframe, their outfits leaving little to the imagination.
“Time for Comic-Con Robbie! Quick question, do you think this Black Cat costume compliments Tammy’s tush enough?” Ava playfully teases, giving a squeeze to Tammy’s rear as the other hippo giggles.
“Uuuuh, yeah. Looks good.”

After the initial shock wore off, Rob was glad to be with Ava, looking more excited than ever as the trio walked their way across the convention floor.
“So this whole time you had passes?”
“Yep! I’m sorry I tricked you Robbie, I just wanted to give you a nice surprise.”
“Are you kidding me?! I’m so glad you’re here! I’ll be honest...this weekend wouldn’t be nearly as fun without you here.”
Ava was about to reply when Rob continued, “and your costumes! WOW! How did you get them so accurate! I mean you got the colors, the shine, the...”
Tammy chuckles as Rob continues to ramble, “I see he hasn’t changed much, I’m just happy that you care about him enough to do something like this. I know he’s in good hands with you.”
A smile appears on Ava, “Thanks Tammy, you know I’d be completely lost without your help.
Rob continued to ramble, seemingly unaware the two hippos were having a heart to heart
“-Then that raises another question!! Who would win, Wonder Woman or Black Cat?”
Ava and Tammy look at each other, a grin appearing on both of their faces as the two say in unison.
“You do Robbie,”
With that the hippos are in motion, quickly moving so that they trapped Rob between their hips, smooshing him against each other as Tammy and Ava saunter their way across the con floor, Rob blushing like a madman as he could feel their every movement, soft thighs pressing all around him.
“Sounds good to me!”
A chuckle comes from Ava as she whispers to her boyfriend, revealing the third and final surprise:
“Hope you weren’t thinking you were gonna have that big bed all to yourself hun, we’re sharing the room with you.”

This was a fantastic Patreon pic that :iconrobthehoopedchipmunk brought to life amazingly. I've always had the idea to have Ava dress as Wonder Woman, and Rob was more than happy to make that idea a reality. :P
Pair that with his gal Tammy dressed as Black Cat, I'm sure a lot of you wish you were in Rob's shoes, I know I am XD
This continues off the story I wrote Rob for his birthday pairing Rob and Ava together, and I gotta say I love writing the two as a couple, it's just fun really XD So expect more coming with this dynamic duo :p
